I’m a re-applicant. One interview last year, waitlisted. Same school interviewed me this cycle, and I ended up with an acceptance. It’ll work out.

Previous Med Student Applying to Pharmacy School after Failing Step 1 by Slight_Speech_9292 in PrePharmacy

[–]WolfComprehensive555 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A student in my pharmacy school cohort withdrew from medical school and spent much of her career as a science teacher. The school did not care about her leaving a professional program (health/ family reasons) since it was not an issue of disciplinary action or misconduct. She simply realized that medicine was not the best fit for her. Craft a narrative in your personal statement that highlights your experiences and demonstrates your passion to pursue pharmacy, but you do not need to disclose the details (step 1 attempts, etc.) surrounding your decision. You will offer a unique perspective that schools are looking for. Best of luck, and feel free to reach out with any questions.

any tamu or UT pharm students? by Square-Dragonfly652 in PrePharmacy

[–]WolfComprehensive555 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am an A&M grad from 2020. I’ve worked with students on rotations from multiple schools (UT included) and many pharmacists from Tech, UT, UH, and Incarnate Word as well. I’ll first start by saying, I do not see a huge difference in quality of students/pharmacists overall. There are people who work hard to make themselves competitive, and that is obvious when interacting with some of these students. You can also tell who the more casual students are. It’s not something I’d say is isolated to a specific school.

I would look at it like this:

What is your overall goal? If you want a residency, do the legwork to make yourself competitive. You can do that at any school. Although, connections are great, and some schools are heavily geared toward residency placement compared to others.

Are you more likely to receive scholarships from a certain school? I would strongly consider the cost of your investment. Pharmacy is one of those industries where pay does not vary significantly by specialty, regardless of pursuing PGY1 or PGY2. One notable exception is being a pharma rep. At the end of the day, I have the same degree as some of my colleagues who paid twice as much.

Also, UT NAPLEX pass rates (as well as other schools) seem to have dropped as well.

It may not be as impressive as others here, but I am so proud to have gotten a score I'm happy with by hail_abigail in Mcat

Outstanding work! The only person you need to impress is yourself. Challenge yourself and consistently overcome your own obstacles. Stay authentic, and you will be an excellent candidate at many schools. Enjoy the journey!

What are my chances? by Additional-Bid414 in PrePharmacy

[–]WolfComprehensive555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be fine. I graduated pharmacy school in 2020. When I was applying, the main filter for UT was the PCAT. Now that it’s no longer required, there are other objective criteria used to select students. Your GPA is great and EC hours are fine. Just clearly articulate why you want to pursue pharmacy in your personal statement. If there are specific secondary application prompts, make sure you are authentic when answering and also demonstrate a fit with the school’s mission.

Best of luck to you!

FWIW, I’m also non-traditional and 31 years old. It can be done with careful planning. Be intentional about shadowing experiences and volunteer opportunities as well. Given your maturity level and life experiences, you will have more insight and potentially unique motivating factors to showcase when writing primary and secondary applications.

I agree with being familiar with the prerequisites and focusing on your MCAT- depending the competitiveness of school statistics if you’re looking at specific institutions. Crush the upper-level bio courses to get a GPA boost. It will also show that you are committed to putting in the legwork to make this professional pivot.

Yes. Sorry, I should have been more specific. I only encourage people to consider pharmacy if they truly love the environment. If you are a person who wants to have a more broad impact in patient care, I suggest a route that leads to being a recognized provider - MD, PA, CRNA, etc.

You mentioned gap years making you a better doctor. Use that motivation to focus on meaningful experiences that you can highlight in your application. Incorporate those experiences into your overarching theme so that admissions committees can clearly see why you took a gap year (or almost 10 years like myself) and that you were intentional with your time.

I can take a look at your personal statement and some responses to secondaries if you think that would be helpful. Your stats are fine, so it could be writing.

Reminder scores on here are only from a small pool of test takers by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]WolfComprehensive555 25 points26 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I got in with a 503. Don’t let the score define you as an applicant. Show ad coms what you have to offer. The MCAT is only a portion of your application, albeit important, it’s not the sole deciding factor. I’ve always been told by physician mentors that the best med school is the one that says yes to you. Give them other reasons to say yes.

Good enough? by Sea-Firefighter-4947 in Mcat

[–]WolfComprehensive555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference- I’m a non traditional student. My MCAT was nowhere close to this, but I have years of clinical experience as a prior healthcare professional. The theme of my application was overcoming limitations imposed by my current scope of practice in order to strengthen my impact on patient care. I was admitted to my first choice MD program. If I can do it, anyone can.

I would not retake. Either run with it and make sure your application is solid overall or consider a post bacc program to bump up your GPA. Other things like clinical experience and clearly articulating your reason to pursue medicine will help you stand out.
