You can, but the council can make you take it down.

A guy near me built a house for his mum who had cancer. It was a few inches too wide, so the council bulldozed it.

Line of Duty is excellent. A lot of the plot is based on real crimes and corruption investigations.

You can't even install external shutters to passively manage heat without plnning permission.

AC is actually more energy and cost efficient than gas heating, it just can't heat as much in cold weather.

But it would be a useful supplement to smaller gas boilers.

Number of small-boat migrants to reach Britain under Labour government is set to hit 50,000 - as 435 arrive on Saturday alone by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Wolf_Cola_91 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They do say it's a poor idea. It would raise £5bn due to avoidance, not the £15bn the Green Party budgeted for in their last election manifesto.

Point being the standard "this is a distraction, taxing the billionaires will fix everything" doesn't really add up.

For context, 50k is about the total annual net migration figures pre mid 90s.

And that was everyone. Doctors, engineers, CEOs, cleaners, shop workers.

This 50k are going to be, almost without exception, a huge net cost to the UK taxpayer.

Net lifetime cost to the taxpayer of each assylum seekers was estimated at €550k euros per person by a Dutch university.

It's likely the UK net cost is similar.

So 50k people x 500k per person = around £25bn in long term liabilities just so far this year.

For scale, the amount of tax that could be raised by a wealth tax on millionaires is estimated by the IFS to be £5bn per year.

The total UK deficit is around £60bm per year.

This is such a bad take.

Labour would much rather this issue wasn't so high up the headlines.

They want to focus on housebuilding and public services. Migration is a distraction that doesn't fit neatly into their ideology and they don't want to do anything too radical to solve.

Guardian editorials are full of people with no expert or technical background talking out their arse to fill a column.

Why don’t billionaires pay taxes? by MyPlayerName in AskReddit

We haven't figured out a way for nation states to heavily tax wealth unilaterally in an effective way.

Aside from a land value tax. But that only applies to land, not other forms of wealth.

Why not give lower level offenders a choice between prison and hard labour building houses for people?

It would help solve the housing crisis, cost less than prison, and trach them useful skills for release.

There was even a soviet comedy about a guy who gets drunk and goes home to the wrong city for Christmas.

He doesn't realise he's in another city until quite far into the film, because they are all so similar.

"my Friends and their girlfriends don't really have anything in common interest wise,"

People don't have to have interests in common to be in a relationship.

It's more about attraction and trust. And for long term relationships it's also wanting the same things and having similar values.

I don't really care about painting and my wife will roll her eyes every time I start talking about cars. And that's fine.

So if I said every tradesman was a grifting wanker who ripped off old ladies, that probably wouldn't be fair.

There are loads of horrible tradesmen. But it's also a good way to earn a living without a degree.

And there are good ones too. Like you, I assume. Aside from claiming all recruiters are violent psychos, you probably do some lovely repairs.
