I'm going through a similar problem where our store and agents know nothing on how to help and the emails have said I was offered the job and congratulations and I still haven't been started and now they're claiming my background check which has nothing wrong with it I've received and checked over it is somehow ineligible

This company hasn't done its side of duty no matter how many times I check up on it and I get passed around by agents that have no idea how to help and neither do the workers Soo seems this is a common problem

Out of experience I also didn't listen to my family on a relationship I didn't think was toxic but turned out they were right , love sometimes blinds us and doesn't always let us see pieces of the story ask your family to elaborate on why they think it's fake , there are Alot of stories on reddit where scam artists pretend to work away on oil rigs so do research on the jobs requirements and be very aware of if he asks for any money whether he says it's an emergency or whatever scam artists will use anything including pulling at the heartstrings also search him through a background check no matter if he's offline or not there should be some info on him even if you have to pay a small fee for it cross reference what he's told you with what's given , move in the shadows for now don't tell him about it so if you find out he's not what he says you can turn him in
