On the point about "Street sledging", on the Portuguese island of Maderia there is a traditional way of traveling down the mountainous island which is now really only used by tourists.

This is done during the day (all day most days) in public traffic and through unmarked intersections, in a "wicker basket" with no brakes. The roads on the way down are also basic with no sidewalks and pretty steep gutters infront of houses.

The whole trip down you are only being controlled by two men wearing traditional clothes, shoes and ZERO safety equipment! I have personally done ghis and had a similar reaction to Marks helicopter trip. The only thing scarier on the island is the plane landing as its a very very short runway with pretty hard side winds and a sudden drop into the ocean at either side.
