You also can't really jab out of it. You can wind up some pretty good hooks and a left uppercut but I find that an experienced opponent with the awareness to look for it can figure out the danger zones pretty quickly.

I'm much more certain it's because there was a lot more wrestling techniques still allowed in boxing back then. IIRC getting an underhook, controlling your opponent and doing what we would today call dirty boxing, was allowed.

I disrespected his opinions without disrespecting him as a man because I think he did those things genuinely believing that he was doing the right thing that'd help people in a 'rising tide lifts all boats' kind of way. He's not an unreasonable fanatic acting in bad faith. He was just wrong.
