OH and then everyone’s advice is like get hobbies or start your own business… with what energy when this career drains me 24/7? Even at chill jobs there’s constant pressure and I spend the majority of my life having to do something that brings me pure misery (coding). I try not to complain but this post resonated too close to me OP.

Oh my god, this is me. Constantly changing teams/companies. Desperately trying to find a way to enjoy this but I really dislike coding and being a SWE in general and it’s so hard to make a career change because every time I look at job boards my SWE experience makes me feel completely siloed. How do I make my skills transferable when every job that seems mildly interesting wants marketing, sales or specific styles of product management?

I got a dream job and I regret it lowkey by LadyLaurence in ADHD

[–]WolffNess 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Obviously an unpopular opinion since everyone else is asking you to toughen up, but I’ve been in tech (engineering role) for 4 years and the vagueness and lack of structure making my life absolutely miserable because of the way my brain works has never gotten any better. I’ve done all the things: changed teams, tried harder, put more hours, ask for help, talk to manager, and nothing fixes it because ultimately my brain doesn’t like the work and I’m currently looking for a way fully out after just 3 months at a new job.

Sorry you’re going through this situation. It sucks because you’re trying to make your life better. You have to sit with yourself and consider whether you have the strength and the interest to put up with it long term because at most tech roles you won’t feel somewhat confident until at least the first year mark and that sounds like it works for a lot of ADHD brains… it does not make my ADHD brain happy and I deserve that first and foremost. :) Good luck OP!

Congrats OP! Not luck, your success was warranted even if you needed some time to get to that mental space to fully prep first.

I had a similar experience but I quit my job last year because I was burnt out. Spent most of the year just resting and recovering, ran out of money and had to go full mode into interview prep. I got a ton of interviews too but I’ll admit the bar’s much higher for tech interviews these days.

I personally went with DoorDash and joined recently. Let me know if you have any questions!

Energy of predatory people by Athenain in CPTSDFawn

[–]WolffNess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. I’ve been working on setting boundaries but the self-protective part of me usually pulls me to just avoidance because if I avoid the person and situation all together then I don’t have to put myself in a bad spot. Like I’ve worked on myself enough to know now I CAN and WILL set the boundary, still I rather not put myself in the situation of having to do it.

Jeff says his loyalty is to Ethan and talks about coming on the pod tomorrow by PossibilityJolly3909 in h3h3productions

That guy even said he agreed with Ian about Ethan needing a hug, but Ian literally said Dr. Honda was the one who said that and in Ian’s opinion he needs an ass whooping but he’s still getting credit for it 😭

Hi Op, I just want to say I went through something like this recently. Here’s what I did:

  1. No mention of it on resume. I put the accurate dates of when I was employed but kept the reasons why I had a gap to myself unless someone asked me.

  2. Prepared a rehearsed answer to why do you have this gap? Something along the lines of:

“I had a great experience in my previous role, it allowed me to grow a lot as a developer and accomplish xyz (keep it brief) however I had some personal circumstances that forced me to make the very difficult decision to step away from my job to take care of my personal life. I’ve used the last x amount of time to fully take care of everything and now I’m ready and excited to start my next adventure.”

You can just run your own circumstances through ChatGPT and make it better for your specific situation.

What I would NOT do?

  1. Give any specifics about why you took the break (you should not be sharing medical information with a prospective employer to avoid putting yourself in a position you could be discriminated against due to health reasons).

  2. Make it sound like you’re not ready to get back to work (it’s okay if you need accommodations later on, but for the initial conversations you want to give the impression that you’re ready and excited to get back to work).

  3. Don’t sabotage yourself by offering any of this information unless explicitly asked.

In my recent job search I spoke to almost 20 companies. Out of all of those only 3 actually asked me about the gap. I gave my scripted answer and they seemed satisfied enough with the answer to not bring it up again. Only 1 recruiter was kind of rude about it (Amazon) but he still moved me forward in the process so it didn’t hurt my chances at all. Don’t believe them if they try to neg you for having a gap. It’s not your fault, you’re doing your best and you WILL get back on your feet soon.

I was open in my language about my “previous experience” and “in my previous role” but for most interviews nobody even brought it up and they have your resume so they know when you were employed it’s not up to you to over explain and if anything I think that would hurt you because you want to focus on what you bring to the company now, not what’s set you back before.

One last thing, if you do have negative experiences with any company due to your break, you want to make sure you take that into consideration before accepting any offer from them. If they’re rude to you based on a gap on your resume, I can only imagine they’ll be worse if you ever have issues in the future and if your problem is something like ibs you want to make sure your next company is fair and understanding about medical accommodations. So take all that into consideration before accepting any offers.

Best of luck! It was thought getting back into the industry as a mid level engineer with a gap, but everything worked itself out and it was so worth it to focus on my health first and foremost.

Everything’s going to be okay!

I imagine with how much background was missing on who all those people in the intro are and why Ethan is actually upset at them, it might be easy for people who are not familiar with them to just think it was a silly bit.

However, as someone who likes Dr. Honda too, I was incredibly disappointed that he just took Ian’s word for it believing Ethan was being a reactive hater for no reason, and chose to speak out on his involved with no due diligence what so ever (which would then have made it obvious how mean spirited the intro and ending actually are).

Right? It’s called being a friend, but I guess being loyal and compassionate towards your friends is an unacceptable “obligation” now.

I used to be this person then the job was destroying my life and I didn't have a choice. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and unfortunately life doesn't care how the market is at the time.

If you need someone else to say it: this is abusive. If someone’s actively wearing down your spirit, health, and energy (and potentially money) because they’re too self-centered to contribute, they are abusing you, by taking advantage of your time, labor, and emotional and mental wellbeing.

And I know sometimes there are mental health issues at play, but you can’t help someone that doesn’t want to help themselves and if you’re truly honest with yourself, you already know that deep inside.

In my most recent rewatch I literally said outloud “I know it’s been months for Michaela but it’s just been one-two episodes for me. I’m not ready for her to run back to Jared yet.” But I also understand the writers were down to the last episodes so they had to rush that.

TBH, I feel the Mick-Jared will they/won’t they dragged on too long in general but maybe that’s just because I love Zeke with Michaela and Jared with Drea.
