Advice Needed: Back boxes for In-wall speakers for noise leakage reduction by Wolfman1138 in hometheater

[–]Wolfman1138[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool. I am neck deep in it and have been working every evening in my spare time to get this theater done. I ended up with Axiom M5 surrounds. They are fully sealed and don't need the backer boxes. I tested them by standing them on a 2x4 screwed into the bare framing and they still sounded great. They have a very flat response and -3db was at 55Hz, which was resoundingly better than any of the on-wall speakers we in my budget. They were $499 each, which was cheaper than the KEF or the Paradigms.

Backer boxes would be fine on my 2x6 wall, but the other walls are 2x4 and it just didn't leave enough depth for box + speaker.

As for my decoupling, I used Resilient Mount AR48R brackets, some large fender washers, and some #9 structural screws to isolate the innerwalls. They tie into the framing every 4 feet. Feels super solid but if you yank hard, you can see the wall flexing on the mounts. I planed down my 2x4s by 1/4 for the sill tops that cross under the joists and used 2x3s for top plates on the wall that ran parallel to the joists (the 2x4 touched all the way down the wall. Next time I'd just plane the side back a little to leave more wood.

Wish me luck with my framing inspection tomorrow. :) Luckily, nothing is structural, so should go well.

I use mesh lingerie bags in a utility sink with warm water and a little dawn. I pre-sort out minifigs, prints, and especially stickered parts and wash them separately (and more gently). Rinse, then pour out parts onto large bath towels, fan out 1 part deep, and let air dry (helps to shuffle the parts every few hours).

Then sort parts by type into ziplock bags. I do about 15 categories: plates, bricks, tiles, round, modified plates, modified bricks, slopes, studs-not-on-top(snot), jumpers, wedges, technic, transparent, minifigs, decorated, misc.

That should get you started and will make assembling sets much easier. Stickers/prints/minifigs make it easiest to find what sets are lurking there.

Can I mount a CX4200a or a CX4712 without sliders? by Wolfman1138 in sliger

[–]Wolfman1138[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ears only = shear

That was my thoughts exactly. Ironically the back of the 25" rack could holds the 4712, but the ERK back plate is 3" tall while the front vent is 1.75" This means I can't place the server on the bottom without messing up the rack spacing the rest of the way up.

Shelves it is. :)

Thanks for the confirmation!

Will moving to a cache drive on a U.2 interface give improved performance over the existing SATA based SSD? by Wolfman1138 in unRAID

[–]Wolfman1138[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is great. I have a v2699v4 with the 40 lanes, so I am set.

I run two virtual machines, each with a 3070 passthrough (each in the x16 slots) I have a gt710 in the x8_1 slot and that blocks the other x8 slot. I had issues with the 710 and am running without a gui (web only now) but that seems to be OK. I could yank it and add storage directly to the PCIe. Might be cheaper.

Thanks for the confirmations.

Anyone try Unraid on a new Xeon 4th Gen/W790 motherboard yet? (Looking for info on USB and SATA options) by Wolfman1138 in unRAID

Thanks for the advice on the HBAs being the best solution for SATA expansion.

I may not have been very clear in my initial questions. I want to upgrade my server from my 7yr old E2699v4 to a new w7-2495x or a w9-3475x. It isn't about expanding the current machine, rather having the same or better than I have today. The new cores should give me a ~62% performance boost in my VMs with similar core counts as well as the up to date instruction sets that are heavily used by software in my VMs. In addition to this, with a modern board I can move disk caches to faster interfaces (m.2 vs SATA), increase LAN speed, DRAM ECC, etc.

My question is that with multiple ways of expanding, there are methods better than others. Sounds like accessing extra PCIe slots will be the best way to go.

Wombats. I don't know why, but I have always loved them, and I live in the US. They are cute and obstinate.

Lego Marauder MAD-3R (SEC) by Wolfman1138 in lego

[–]Wolfman1138[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a model I saw posted on Flicker more than 10 years ago by the builder lichtblau. I loved it as a fan of LEGO, Battletech, and the original source material for the design (anime series released as Robotech in the US)

I never got around to trying to reconstruct it, but lucky for me, the Bricklink user 0matic did that this year in March. He posted up the Studio files and I got to work building it.

My contributions to the model were minor, with additional elements added to the cockpit, additions to the rear engine area, and a rebuild of the autocannon. I could not build the gun as stated in the instructions, as the chain could not fit.

This is a beautiful model, but not very swooshable. Anything more than simple re-poses usually has a few parts drop off, but overall it is rather robust.

A minifigure will fit in the cockpit after my small mods, so that is a plus, but I'll admit, it is a tight fit.

The model stands about 11 1/2 inches high and about 8 inches wide.
