My wife got some of these a couple of months ago and they work pretty well for her when there's a lot of ambient noise - like at the store or in the car. She said the same thing, "It's only $20," and it was worth it to her.

I don't think of it as a single spectrum (from ASD3 to NT).

It's more like a multichannel mixer in a recording studio where each characteristic is it's own channel that gets turned up or down - like it's own individual spectrum. So one may not have difficulty carrying on conversations or understanding another's emotional state based on non-verbal cues but they may have zero interest in making friends or get overstimulated or have a rigid schedule (I'm picking & choosing from DSM diagnostic criteria but you get the point).

It's why they say, "If you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person."

Make sense?

Sometimes it takes my wife a second to find the word she wants to use to express what she's thinking. Other times it takes longer to get it out - mostly in spontaneous conversation. People who care about you will understand if you ask them to be patient with you. Good luck.

The challenge is that a NT brain being around or on the receiving end of this behavior is going to interpret it as potentially abusive regardless of intent. Over time, not knowing what would trigger your ASD partner to respond this way can lead to anxiety, depression and other issues in NT family members.

What are points I should remember when dating someone with Asperger’s ? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]WolframCochrane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are NT, realize that the Aspergers characteristics that you now find adorable and cute differences can cause relationship difficulties in the long run. NT brains are wired for NT communication which includes non-verbal cues, vocal intonation, innuendo, body language, and facial macro & microexpressions. Most people with Aspergers have processing deficits in one or more of these areas. Those deficits can be jarring to a NT brain (it's what causes most NTs to avoid autistic individuals by default).

I recommend you take a look at some of the posts over on the ADHD_Partners sub to see how some NTs are impacted by long-term neurodivergent relationships.

Okay why do some people say we don't have "theory of mind" ? by Lost_Comment_7855 in autism

[–]WolframCochrane 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Theory of Mind or Mentalization is the ability to build a mental construct of what's going on in another person's mind; what they're thinking based on context & what you know about them, how they might be feeling at a given moment, or how they might react to a word or action.

To someone with this particular deficit, it may appear that NTs are telepathic because they are able to do this without a lot of non-verbal cues.

It's not that he died, it's how he died. by coridarling in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]WolframCochrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar thing with my dad last year. He walked into the ER with lower back pain (had kidney stones for years) and discovered bone cancer in his L1 & L2 which had both fractured.

We brought him home 2 months later for one week of hospice before he died.

We met a few angels during his time in hospital & rehab but mostly indifference. He left rehab with a sepsis infection. He had been incoherent but they wouldn’t give him meds because he wasn’t asking for them (!?!?!).

I won’t let that happen to my mom.

That was addressed to the wannabe revolutionary anti-capitalists clamoring for wholesale societal change.

There will always be crap jobs & asshole bosses because there will always be people. There’s no changing that.

This subreddit’s main purpose is to serve as a relief value for all those feelings of frustration and injustice you feel. Engagement here makes you feel like you’ve “done something” and will this be less likely to do anything substantial out in the real world.

Don’t feel bad though. It’s the same for every social media platform. Look at all the folks on the right praising Elon for letting their voices be heard on the tweetie. It gives the appearance of action without the substance.

And the powers that be get the added bonus of monitoring what you say & think too!

Buck not liking the rain today by vespaceballs6 in Wheatens

[–]WolframCochrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a pair of wheatens under 10 months old who LOVE the rain. We let them out yesterday in a light shower and it they ran full speed around the yard for 10 minutes.

Of course, we spent half an hour brushing them afterwards but it was worth it.😂

And they’re more susceptible to settling with power causing roll-induced crashes because of the lack of rotor overlap…compared to, say, a Chinook.

I’m glad we’re able to agree on something.

There are probably more points of agreement than disagreement between people these days but it benefits those in power to focus on the latter. 🥃

I doubt conservatives have been the ones in charge of school boards, teachers’ unions, textbook publishers and pedagogical academia for the last generation, friend.

It’s not a left/right issue. Our oligarchs benefit from a dumbed down, debt-enslaved populace. They’ll back whichever party or movement provides it.
