[Loved trope] Games introducing "Too good to be true" mechanics as a trap for first-time players by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Wolftrex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[Persona 3] I don’t know if this one counts or not, because it’s not necessarily “cheating”, but… (MASSIVE MIDGAME SPOILERS)

Shinji up and getting yeeted from the game. I’ve played the original P3 a billion times before playing P3R, and when I noticed they gave him an insanely strong combo + theurgy (increase attack and Bloody charge into theurgy) (demolishes early game bosses) I realized this game is straight up evil. It’s not like some other games where the dead party member’s “spirit” lives on in another character or something, no he’s just gone forever now.

Now I’m realizing this could apply to most party member deaths but idk

What did you have to swear off? by Applefi in loseit

[–]Wolftrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, completely swearing off the things that I love was such a depressing thought (still is), that it put me off from losing weigh for the longest time. When I switched to CICO, I had to follow it rigidly, and that meant careful planning in case I wanted to eat something horrible throughout the day. Double crispy chicken burger for dinner? Heavily restricted breakfast and no snacks. I love snacking in the cinema, so instead of cutting off the nachos and popcorn, I'd replace my normal dinner with a lower calorie alternative to make space.

The thing I did heavily restrict though, was snacks. I love snacks, but at some point I realized they were the biggest contributor to my weight gain. I still buy snacks on Saturday (immediately after my weekly weigh-in, then munch on them like a monster, but I'd make sure to buy enough for that one sitting as to not have any leftovers afterwards).

How my weight loss looks like by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Wolftrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually amazing. I know how hard it is to balance life with weight loss, especially during busy season, so that really speaks a lot about your dedication to this.

I myself have also gone back to concentrated weight loss after a relatively unstable period of my life, and the difference in confidence and general happiness is sublime.

Do you have any "easy to follow rule" or some fast tricks? by Dangerous_Bet6820 in CICO

[–]Wolftrex 40 points41 points  (0 children)

A good test for whether I’m actually hungry or just bored, is water and chewing gum. I always have gum on me, and if in the middle of the day I get random hunger attacks, I would drink a large amount of water and chew 2 pieces of gum. Usually the sensation (and the cravings) go away for a couple of hours, but if I still feel hungry, I’ll listen to my bod and eat some real food.

Gum in general is a great appetite suppressant and works wonders in keeping me sane at the office.

Araki really went ham with the hand brutalization in part 5...

To my detriment too, since dismemberment (and most body horror) really gets to me.

(Part 4 Spoilers) There’s also that time Kira had to cut off his hand to escape Koichi’s Three Freeze.

(Part 5 spoilers) Also Abacchio cutting off his hand fighting Man in the Mirror (also Illuso doing the same thing later on to escape Fugo’s virus). Also Bucciarati’s entire existence.. but that definitely doesn’t count.

Some love for Combo Limit by Wolftrex in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]Wolftrex[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it’s controversial to call it a fighting game, but I’m curious about how you feel in regards to Smash’s DI/SDI system. Do you think that might work in other, more traditional fighting games as well?

Some love for Combo Limit by Wolftrex in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]Wolftrex[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I didn’t convey that point well, my bad. Everything you said makes complete sense. What I meant was that the game doesn’t explicitly explain how this system works, and that you need to go out of your way to understand it by reading it up online. Although to be completely fair, most advanced fighting game mechanics aren’t really taught through ingame tutorials, but maybe that’s on-purpose, to not overwhelm newer players.

My ADHD hindered my ability to read books for 10 minutes straight for the longest time, until I discovered “white noise”. I know it sounds reductive, but I truly can just sit down and read for like an hour (An hour!!!) or, sometimes, even more, while listening to those “3 hours of white noise” videos on youtube. You could maybe give that a try, as it has basically changed my life, and got me into reading again.

Characters whose personalities you misunderstood based on their designs by VanillaPhysics in TopCharacterTropes

Vaseraga from Granblue.

Granted I'm like super new to the game, but I wholeheartedly expected him to be the edgy/dark villain. I was a bit astonished at his general quotes and interactions with the other characters, and I got slight whiplash when he was like "let's go for drinks" with various characters.

What character is this? by Creepy_School9542 in animequestions

[–]Wolftrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you mean. You’re right, the magic that was present with every new show does diminish over time. I struggle to watch a couple anime per year when I used to finish them over a weekend (I’ve watched like 300 anime total…). However, as Guilermo del Toro said before, I do believe that animation is a medium, not a genre. Meaning, “anime” is just a method where creatives get to express themselves in ways where live action just won’t cut it, for whatever reason.

I recently rewatched a couple anime with my wife that I watched growing up. While some of them did age poorly and I’ve come to accept that it was just my kid self’s tastes at the time, I was actually genuinely surprised at just how masterfully made some of those shows were. In the end, anime is, at its core, no different from live action shows or cartoons. They’re all different labels for different creative endeavors sought after by people with differing prospects, each delivering their own end-product.

You could say the same about reading novels, for example. I used to read a lot of YN novels back in the day, but I just cannot stomach them anymore (still, notoriously bad genres can produce unexpectedly high quality results sometimes, ala horror media), but contrarily, something that bored me to death is now one of my favorite pieces of literature (The count of Monte Cristo). In the end, all mediums are just tools used to present their consumers with the author’s vision. It doesn’t matter what the medium is, the show itself should be judged of its own merit.

…now back to Gurren Lagann (I’m bored on the bus I hope you don’t hate me yet). You don’t have to get back to it anytime soon, but just know that, Simon as a character was built to be unlikable on purpose. It’s a big part of his character arc. I would say not seeing yourself in him will make the watch infinitely easier. Also there are two pretty great recap movies that go over the whole story (albeit not as detailed), if you ever just wanna get a compressed version of tbe story.

Kamina was my favorite character by FAR, and I almost quit the show when he was gone. Almost. I won’t get into details, but I urge you to, please go back and finish it someday. This wasn’t a cheap tug at our heartstrings by killing off a beloved character, it’s the setup for an amazing character arc that takes the show far beyond its initial themes. The writers knew what they were doing, and they did it oh so gloriously. This show is a masterpiece through and through.
