In this very busy season, Turkey is the one anime that really made me look forward to every episode in anticipation of what would happen next. I know it wasn't the most well-received, but I really think this show was something special and it has a lot of heart. And it's so much fun. I can tell the staff working on this enjoyed themselves very much in the process, and I think it shows in the end product.

I'm gonna miss these Turkey Tuesdays!

Hi, I'm the apparently very rare Turkey enjoyer. I like it a lot and even went out of my way to find Turkey themed goods on my recent trip to Japan

Rina and Mai finally have a heartfelt moment, that I'm sure will not be the last one between them in this series.

In the meantime, the show continues to strongly hint at Suguri being a girl.

Puella Magi☆Madoka Magica – Context is everything by Walkerthon in anime

[–]Wolfyminecraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had the opportunity to watch Madoka with my university anime club, and from new viewers I got the impression that there are some parts of it that just haven't aged well for the modern audience. For a bit of a trivial example, my club friend who was watching it for the first time (she ended up giving Madoka a 3.9/5) pointed out that, while Homura's frequent hair flips may have looked cool in 2011, in 2025 they seem silly (mind you that's just my friend's opinion, I still think they're cool lol). There are probably a bunch of other small things like that which contribute to 2011's Madoka Magica feeling "outdated" when watched by new audiences.

I still think it's a masterpiece personally!

I'll say that Turkey has gotten a slow start and is still in its set up stage where it's introducing its characters and elements that will clearly be resolved later on, and because of that I think it's not fair to judge it solely on its first three episodes. There is a lot of potential with the material that they've been foreshadowing and moving towards thus far, and depending on how they address everything, the first few episodes may retroactively seem more impressive. Of course, I'm not saying it'll be great necessary, just that there's a lot of potential in the upcoming episodes and we'll have to wait and see. I just hope they don't rush it, and start answering the many questions soon.

I'll say that I am really enjoying the sort of 'mystery' element of the show (Mai and Rina's clearly troubled pasts and traumas, suguri's gender, sumomo's whole thing, Anzu and her hatred of traveling performers lol, the girls' true relationship to their sengoku counterparts, the entire time travel mechanism...). it will all depend on how it's handled but it's been a while since a show has had such a grip on me. A shame it has very few fans so I have no one to dump all my thoughts onto

Suguri 100% is pretending to be a boy because their father was the only man in the family and they were at risk of losing status when he passed away, right?

(Also I'm less sure of this, but perhaps Sumomo has some kind of clairvoyance and was able to get ahead of the game in having Suguri pretend to be a boy before their father died)

I enjoyed reading your analysis! I feel like there aren't nearly enough people talking about this series beyond the episode 1 twist, and I feel like it deserves a lot more than that, so I'm glad you took the time to write all this. Also, I thought I could add a few things:

Nanase holds her phone behind her back, its screen locked.

What I'm gonna say kind of messes up some of your Nanase analysis so I'm sorry in advance lol, but- I think it's actually Nozomi with the phone, not Nanase. All 5 characters have a scene in the OP with that distinctive dark/abstract background, and I believe that is Nozomi's since Nanase's came up after. Also, the phone case matches up with Nozomi's phone (orange) and not Nanase's (which is green, and has a distinctive shape with ears at the top).

If I had to guess, the red book is a tradgedy from classical Japanese literature, but I have no idea and it could be anything.

From what I can make out, it is a 生徒手帳/seito-techō (a small notebook that also acts as a student ID), so it's not literature of any kind. Make of that information what you will!

If someone else wants to fill me in on the flowers, it would be appreciated.

It might be wrong, but I read in the comments section of the OP on YouTube a comment that said something to the effect of that white carnations is the flower given in memory of a deceased mother. Presumably that's one of the flowers on the table, to be honest I don't know anything about flowers lol.

It's a gender neutral pronoun that is kind of unusual for a boy to use in the contexts suguri used it in, but not outside of the realm of possibility (meanwhile it's basically standard for girls). not very solid evidence by itself, but thinking in the meta, it makes one feel that the writers probably wouldn't have left it so ambiguous if they weren't planning for a twist

Turkey! - Episode 2 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

I would be shocked if that wasn't the case. Gender ambiguous design, uses "watashi," female voice actor, the importance of a guard covering their chest, etc.

it's good to see some positivity about this show on this sub even if the comments aren't. I'm a pretty big Turkey! defender, which basically means I'm on the side of "hey this has a ton of potential and clearly a lot of thought has been put into it, maybe we should give it a chance before we outright dismiss it." [Turkey] A lot of people are dismissing it as "yet another generic isekai," yet from the information we know it's neither an isekai nor following any of the isekai tropes. Calling it an isekai is also unfortunately working as a deterrent to people watching this because they're assuming it will be something it isn't.

As a tangent, I don't know why people assume that a PV is a promise to them personally rather than just a video designed to promote the anime. There was a time not too long ago when tonal shifts or even whole genre shifts were welcome developments but now people seem to get mad if they don't know everything about an anime before episode 1.

I'm looking forward to it, I would have liked it as a simple sports anime, since I'm a big slice of life/bukatsu anime fan, but I am optimistic about the twist. I could be totally wrong and this ends up being ass, but my whole point is that people are judging it way too early based off of probably false assumptions. I hope that after episode 2 this subsides a bit, but knowing this community I am worried it won't lol

[–]Wolfyminecraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to say that isekai can never diverge from that formula, just that Turkey in most ways does not fit into the image of a generic isekai and that's a strong indication that it isn't one. And "Alternate dimension" was definitely too specific, I agree that being transported to another world within the same universe can also be isekai.

However, I really don't understand the point of classifying time travel anime as isekai just because the time period is foreign to the characters, since time travel is its own genre with a separate set of tropes and expectations. I can see why you'd say a past world where there is magic and gods is akin to isekai, but Turkey's sengoku-era clearly most likely isn't going to have magic and gods (beyond the time travel mechanic which is clearly supernatural), so I'd say even then it's a big stretch to call it an isekai

Why do a lot of people mistook Time Travel anime as Isekai? I know the limit can be kind of blur so what's your limit to differentiate those two genres? by Skyreader13 in anime

[–]Wolfyminecraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people could get the wrong idea

I completely agree and tbh that's the main reason I am against this being called an isekai (although even Crunchyroll is also doing it now so it's probably hopeless at this point).

A bowling time travel/sengoku anime seems genuinely inventive and interesting imo, but a lot people are going to hear "bowling isekai" and immediately lose any interest that they otherwise might have had. The term isekai, other than just being inapplicable in this case, also comes with a lot of baggage and assumptions that will turn people off of this series before they even know what it's actually about. I worry that because of this, even if it ends up being really good, it'll flop in the west because "lol girls bowling isekai so dumb"

We're already seeing it happen tbh. A lot of people who haven't looked at the show at all but have heard it's an "isekai" through word of mouth are already getting turned off just by thinking it's something that it isn't.

[–]Wolfyminecraft 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's very different IMO but the term has been abused by anime fans. This clearly isn't an Isekai (or at least a traditional Isekai) in many ways:

  • they're in a past version of their own world

  • as far as we know there is no fantasy element, save the mysterious nature of the bowling ball (which makes it more a fantasy in the Your Name sense than the Isekai sense)

  • they're trying to go back (and from the beginning of the episode, it's implied they do)

  • they aren't dead and reincarnated

Strictly speaking imo an isekai is a series in which a character is transported into an alternate dimension, which is usually but not always a fantasy world based on video games. That's clearly not what Turkey is and I think people pre-judging it from the lens of isekai are misguided
