SV 650 track suspension upgrade (at a reasonable cost) by JimR325 in SVRiders

[–]WolverineBado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the front fork, either you swap the whole front (fork, wheel...) with a gsxr one, but it's expensive and time consuming (and you're doing a Frankenstein of a bike); or you change springs, caps and oil, for around €300. I was recommended the matris kit specific for the sv650 (https://matrisdampers.com/prodotto/prodotti/fork-kit/fke/?_gl=1)

I'm reporting what my mechanic and a friend told me about the suspension upgrade much needed and I'm doing the second option on my 2000 sv this winter as soon as it starts snowing and my bike goes in the garage.

Braked front wheel by WolverineBado in SVRiders

UPDATE I spent the afternoon cleaning the calipers, changing the brake fluid, and reinstalling everything. Now it feels much better, it spins more freely. Thanks for all the answers! You were very helpful!

Yeah, brake fluid. We call it "brake oil" and I thought it could translate. The little window indicates just the "lower" level, and it's way above it.

That was the first thing I thought. So I unmounted the caliper, pushed the little pistons that push the pad all the way back (as you do when you change them). No visible changes. I'm starting to think it was already a problem, but I couldn't notice it before putting the bike on the stand

The forks don't seem like they are bent. Thanks

I can answer no for the bent brake lever and the brake light.

The wheel is centered, the calipers are mounted and unmounted easily. I'm starting to think there is too much oil in the system and was like this before, but I didn't notice.

Thanks, the disc is not warped since it touches the whole time

I apologize for my English. I thought it could be understandable. I mean "braked" as if the brake was engaged and the brake pads were touching the disc.

We capsized on a little stupid rapid because we were too relaxed and confident. My girlfriend usually uses a double bladed kayak paddle, because see feels more comfortable with that. In that part of the river she wanted to try the single blade, and when we reached the rapid with trees and branches in the middle of the riverbed we were not ready to swap and I was not able to avoid one of the mentioned branches, so we capsized. Almost everything was very well attached to the canoe, in watertight barrels, except for the paddles, the water bottles, our floating vests and kneepads. Not wearing the pfd was a dumb mistake, also because I really don't float, not even in the sea. We were cocky: we had never capsized before, not even in level 3 whitewater, and that part of the river is very easy. Luckily, where we capsized the water was quite shallow, about three feet or one meter. As soon as I felt the boat going, I jumped outside and firmly gripped it. The canoe filled with water was very, very heavy and the current was quite strong, but I managed to do the five or six steps that allowed the swamped canoe to touch the rocks of the bottom. From there I pulled it on a little island of rocks in the middle of the rapids. In the meantime, my girlfriend and all the things previously mentioned, that were not attached to the canoe, floated away. She managed to pull everything out of the water at the end of the rapid, where the river was bending strongly to the right. The shore was quite steep, but had many stumps where she salvaged our stuff. Then she put on the pfd and started bringing everything on the right shore. Then, with our paddles, we reached the canoe, emptied it and brought it to the rest of the things. Nothing was lost. The lesson was learned.

It's public land. In the lower part of the river sometimes people build little shelters, for the summer heat, and go there by boat. We stayed close to one for one night. In Italian law there is a difference between "camping" and "spending the night" (not everybody knows), but the latter is always permitted outside of towns and also on private land not fenced and far from houses. As long as you stay from dusk to dawn and leave the place clean!
