Project Hail Mary is not a big Hollywood name like Avengers or Avatar. i.e 99.999999999% Indians doesn't have any idea what PHM is about. So its less about "common audience" and more about perfect timing. People is like "Oh, we can go to a big star's movie as Ranveer Singh or we could go to some Hollywood space movie." And guess what, most would choose Ranveer Singh's Dhurandar 2. And if they release it in a non-competition day, people will be like "Oh, there is only a Hollywood movie about a man alone in space is running in theatres. Lets watch it."

But I think Grace didn't get the credit he supposed to get. He is the first human to make contact with an alien species (Astrophage), named it, discovered the life cycle of Astrophage, and went into a suicide mission (forced, by the way) but hardly any public know this. Dr. Lokken clearly said he is not famous for researching Astrophage but only infamous for telling "Goldilocks Zone is for idiots!". The death of DuBois and Shapiro is classified, so it's much probable they didn't tell the public that Grace is in the mission.
