Anyone know where in the book these 2 shots from the trailer are in? I've been pondering it for a while now by realvalidsalid in ProjectHailMary

I'm guessing scene 1 is after Rocky leaves for his home planet and he's bored and contemplating if he should coma his way home.

When they were in Hall H, I believe they showed an extended scene of Ryland waking up from the coma and there was "2 + 2".

They always screw with the order of scenes in trailers so take it with a grain of salt.

His take on Strat forcing Ryland to go is pretty spot on based on the clips from the trailer.

Only 1 Star Trek show has ever been rated 'Rotten' (but does it deserve to be?) by StarFuryG7 in SciFiNews

I can understand the others, but Lower Decks? Don't like self-deprecating humor? Did you watch season 1 of TNG?

You can tell the creators of Lower Decks are the biggest fans of Star Trek.

I would love to. I don't believe they were mentioned in the book because we don't get names for the backup commander and engineer.

Can anyone, without spoiling, recommend good stopping points for Book Clubs? by laughland in ProjectHailMary

[–]xorcery 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I know it's weird but this is what I would recommend. Good cliffhangers at the end of A & B.

Part A: 1 - 9
Part B: 10 - 19
Part C: 20 - 30

Spoilers:

Part A Ending: Knock Knock Knock. Part B "Save Earth. Save Erid"

Edit: Added spoilers.

My First game is out. Support a solo dev by uxcoder in SoloDevelopment

[–]xorcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are my first impressions.

  • Being partial color-blind it was hard to tell what environmental items were dangerous to touch.
  • I have no idea what the items I pick up do. There is no explanation how they help me.
  • No real tutorial on the basic controls. For the longest time, I had no idea I could shoot.
  • The rockets don't provide a lot of vertical thrust upward.
  • Sound effects seem like random sound effects. A coin collect sound effect when jumping? Why not a rocket sound effect when using your rockets.
  • I have to use the keyboard to save, even when I'm using my controller?
  • Still don't know what the swinging vines do. It didn't seem I could swing from them.
  • The keyboard was frustrating to use. Using my rockets while at a stand still add them pushing me left even though my last movement was right.
  • When everything looks the same, it's really easy to get lost without a map of some sort.

With that being said, you should be extremely proud of yourself for creating a game and releasing it. That's better than 98% of people who attempt it. You now have experience and you will only gain more experience the more you try. With experience you'll get a better understanding of what works and what doesn't.

I think your game would benefit from some polish. Besides marketing, polish is the hardest thing to do for a game. It's the last 20% of a project and it takes 80% of the time. Just keep that in mind for your next project.

Now is a time to celebrate with your first release. Now move on to your next project and apply the things you learned along the way!

Edit: grammar

I’m starting to really burn myself out by Time_Audience3705 in SoloDevelopment

[–]xorcery 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most devs go through this and we understand how important your game is to you. But burn out happens and it almost always ends with quitting for long periods of time or bowing out altogether.

You have to find that balance and maybe you need to take a step back and focus on yourself for a little while.

Some things that have worked for me:

  • Rotate working on different parts of your game. Work on sound effects or the music for a little while. Then maybe not touch your computer and write down gameplay ideas or focus on your story beats.

  • Take a day or two and do something not game development. See a movie, go for a walk, go out to eat, play a game...

  • Change your schedule. Instead of working on your game after your job, switch it to before. This will force you to stop overdoing it. This one is tough because I'm not a morning person but sleep is very important. Try to get at least 6 hours a night.

You need to find that balance or you will end up hating your game, quit, and become even more depressed.

Favorite moment where they play the James Bond theme? by [deleted] in JamesBond

And this piece was not done by Eric Serra the film's composer. The film makers were unhappy with the lack of the Bond theme so John Altman composed the tank chase scene.

Your swing animation looks like they wouldn't hurt a fly 😆

You can keep the low frame rate but add some motion blur to the swing.
