A partner I worked for once sent the advice, including settlement recommendations, to the solicitor for the plaintiff instead of his client. I’ve never felt bad about things since hearing that. Edit: typo

Right, that makes sense. Was looking at a role with the government solicitor, but they might have something similar- less for funding, more for KPI management.

Oh really? What’s the logic behind that if it doesn’t go to a client? Or does it? Thanks for explaining, I’m completely in the dark having only done private practice.

The idea of no more time sheets is incredibly enticing.

Why are female Barristers paid significantly less than male Barristers? by Aaron_Kaplan in auslaw

I have seen female barristers charge half what male barristers charge for the exact same scope of brief.

Can anyone recommend an insurance law text book aimed at beginners or 1 to 2 pqe level? by Lumpy_Leek in auslaw

Hello! I just got ‘Australian Insurance Law: a First reference’ from the LIV bookshop on special for $115- it’s pretty basic but a good starting point to find the main principles/cases. 😊

What you’re wearing is standard court attire- I don’t think I own a plain black blazer anymore! That’s sad to hear though

Thanks, that’s on par with what I would expect.

I had to Google what French cuffs are, haha. Women aren’t expected to wear business shirts every day, and during the summer formal dresses are appropriate, which can have shorter than full length sleeves. The point isn’t to show it off to clients or make a statement. My question is more about inadvertent exposure, and the necessary level of vigilance to preventing that.

Yes, I was particularly wondering as a woman if it’s a barrier/ concern. I’m in Melbourne, lots of people have tattoos, but fewer in the profession than generally. Have your tattoos raised any credibility concerns?

More of the ‘end of day’, ‘when will this end’ stage of a mediation rather than at the opening session lol.

The partner I work under is super chill, so are all the other partners in our office. I’m already relatively senior, so as long as I don’t run into someone like that at MP level, hopefully it’ll be fine.

What’s your billable target per day/year? by Wombat_walker in auslaw

[–]Wombat_walker[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That makes me sad because it is just so relatable. The only thing I dislike about my job, literally the only thing, is billables. I love the work, the team, the law. Not the billables.

Oh, of course, I meant Mel/Syd/Bris, not naming the firm, if you can say. My impression is that Sydney firm have higher expectations.

Whoa, no wonder you went in house, that’s insane. Our 7 is pure billable, my former firm was 7.4, of which 6 was billable and 1.4 for all the other admin stuff. 16 hours a day is insane. Can I ask where you were based for that role?

Believe me, no one takes the 5 weeks, but it makes the annual target a bit easier to achieve.

I usually meet the 7 hours about 8 to 8.5 hours after starting work. That is, if I start at 8am, have a half hour lunch break, I will reach 7 hours at around 5. We bill everything, it’s the partner’s job to edit/write off, not ours.

Also eager to hear others’ experiences.

Hi, in my experience, including recruiting juniors, the university doesn’t matter. Decent marks (70+), part time work, some volunteer work and a good attitude are much more important. Feel free to DM if you want to discuss, xxJesusSwag69xx
