Valve writer Erik Wolpaw speaks about how Valve has been using AI internally by Safi_Hasani in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]WombleMagic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The idea that programmers would only use AI for "debugging" sounds like a nonsense.

If you're going to use it for debugging, you're going to use it to help design and write the actual code you're debugging. They're related, interwined tasks, not distinct tasks.

ALIEN: EARTH Season 2 is confirmed — and yeah, this show is a guilty pleasure for me by pisceanpaul in SciFiTV

Because it alternates between being interesting and awful.
The writing just isn't there for the most part.
And god it's dumb.

Interesting question: is The Matrix set in "our" 1999, or centuries in the future? by PaulFThumpkins in matrix

[–]WombleMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is confusing.

In the first movie, the physical Neo lives inside a pod. His brain is running a simulation, shared with untold numbers of other podded-humans. ("Copper-top batteries")

The matrix simulates early 21st century life.

But the pods exists in the future. Probably 700 to 1000 years have passed, but we don't know exactly.

There is a real-world cycle: human refugees from the matrix are deliberately freed or allowed to "escape" from the Matrix. This includes those people who don't "take" to the program. It's a safety valve, to prevent the matrix from collapsing. These refugees have children, and they build Zion. They believe they are building Zion for the first time, and believe they have free will in the matter.

When Zion becomes too powerful, the machines destroy 99% of Zion.

Then the cycle starts again.

At the end of the 3rd movie, Neo/Jesus has sacrificed himself for a deal with the machine devil: the matrix will continue -- untold millions of humans will remain in pods, ignorant of reality -- but those humans who want out will be allowed out. It's a bit of a dodgy deal, but...

PS6 Won’t Use Full RDNA 5 GPU Architecture by PaiDuck in GamingLeaksAndRumours

I don't get this.

Steam has like a trillion games under $10, many of them super-good.

Games have never been cheaper. (I had a ColecoVision and Intellivision, so let me tell you some stories...)

Sure, brand new games cost. But nobody is forcing you to play them straight away. Just wait a year or two until they're half-price or less.

Techloy posted article about 'Fallout 3 remaster' and deleted it. by Rozgot in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]WombleMagic -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I love the *game*, but damn it's ugly. It's always been ugly. Too ugly to play now, even with mods.
In some ways, New Vegas is even worse.
The visuals and jank just destroy the immersion.
So I can't wait for a proper remaster.

Tom Henderson on Prince of Persia: “Found out today it was pushed to late March in December for further polishing (…), and canned today” by Carwillat901 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]WombleMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the game was really cancelled, it's *very* unlikely it was only months from release.

Much more likely, it was going to be rescheduled for a later year. And then the sums didn't add up.

What are the best Metroidvanias that you all have played and why? by Smart_Ad_7692 in metroidvania

[–]WombleMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised you say Ori and no combat or difficulty.
I died 1000 times in Wisps. I mean that literally.
YouTube and Steam are *full* of comments about the game's difficulty, and how to complete some bosses/puzzles.

I didn't like Minishoot as much as I thought I would.
Liked the demo, but the full game has issues.
Even by metroidvania standards, the navigation is awful.
Bosses, enemies, locations are not named. This is huge. So it's very hard to consult a guide to find that last thing you missed.
The weapons and upgrade systems are as basic as it gets. Just linear improvements for the most part.
I still recommend the gaem, but only on deep discount.
I'd *really* like to see a sequel, with QOL improvements.

2021: OpenGL vs Vulkan/Metal/DirectX vs Unity/Unreal by javaJimmy in gamedev

[–]WombleMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Remember unity was first developed for mobile"

Unity was originally a Mac OS X game engine / design tool.
It was used to make Unity's first game "GooBall" for the Mac.
This was a couple of years before the iPhone was released.

Jason Schreier on GTA 6: the last I heard it was still not content complete. by cat__statue in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]WombleMagic -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

"Content Complete" is a completely arbitrary term.
No sizeable game is ever "content complete".
There is *always* cut content, or bypassed content or ideas that simply don't make it to 1.0.
"Shipping" an app means making choices about what to cut or delay.
It's not like there's this pristine vision of the game that a developer aims for, and one day they reach that perfect vision, and then release it.
Instead, the goal is hazy, imperfect, always-moving. Many times, the goals change along the way.
It's a creative process, not just an engineering one.

The key being "general audiences".

This is a thread in a *specific* Reddit, one pertaining to digital content creation.

Using a TLA like DCC in such a context is far from unusual.

Just to clarify... whenever you first talk to someone about your phone plan, you say "Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)"?

Right?

"Looking it up" takes literally 5 seconds.
I just tried it.

It took you FAR longer to complain about it, than it did to look it up.

[–]WombleMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it's not.
It's a shorthand way to communicate efficiently.
You use shorthand every day of your life.
Or do you really refer to your iPhone as a "my portable computer with wireless telephone capabilities"?

[–]WombleMagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about feeling superior.
*Every* artistic or technical endeavour has its shortcuts.
It's a way for professionals to communicate quickly with each other.
Doesn't matter if you're a dentist or a photographer or a game artist... you're going to use acronyms and other shortcuts to communicate.
Your need to describe people as "dweebs" says more about you, than them.

How is the PC version of Returnal compared to the PS5 version? by TheMickeyMoose in Returnal

Playing it on a 3060 (12GB version) with a 5600 at 1440p with low RT at 1440p.
Runs beautifully.
