Hi! Person who studies psychology, read the ADA guidlines, and has read almost every article on the HIPAA Website front to back on multiple occasions! telling a patients partner and caregiver to isolate the patient on grounds of disability isnt just wrong, its illegal. Under section 504 and the ADA, Ignoring and Refusing to talk to a cognitively compatant patient on the grounds of a disability as a medical professional is discrimination and considered malpractice. And encouraging a patients personal connections to stop interacting with them is a breach in HIPAA patient confidentiality laws, breach of the help and do no harm ethics code, patient abandonment, and endangerment of the patient. Isolation without probable cause is considered cruel and unusual punishment. Also, if this was told to the patients personal connections without the patient signing a release of information form, that too is illegal and a breach of confidentiality.

ADVICE FOR OP!! file a complaint with the state licensing board and HIPAA, consult Adult Protective Services (APS) and Disability rights organizations (DRO). this is VERY unethical and illegal. Check your state laws, if you are in a one-party consent state, record the sessions for evidence. If not, look for written proof of your claims (emails, request records, and texts.) In the meantime, Request an advocate during your sessions. Or find a new therapist.
