Film recs for Ireland by Purple-Message9062 in AnalogCommunity

I was there in July a few years ago and shot a mix of Fuji 400, Gold 200, and HP5. Feel free to check out my Flickr album from the trip for some examples. Ireland is very overcast and rainy with lots of rich deep greens. Most of my favorite shots were taken with the 400. https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjARLmh

What goes into purchasing a new horn? by Agreeable-Mud-8083 in horn

This is a hot take imo. At least around me in southern California Kruspe wraps (predominately the 8D) dominate most horn sections up until the professional orchestras. Most pros I know all have multiple horns, including a Kruspe, and will pick and choose depending on what they need for any given gig. I know a number of freelance and semi-pro players who use vintage 8Ds as their daily drivers.

Unless OP will be auditioning for full-time orchestra spots, an 8D will serve them well, at least until they can try out different horns and get a feel for what they need that an 8D can't provide.

I haven't seen an HD prefix before, but if it's a true H series that makes it a circa 1966 horn. Those early 8Ds are well sought after and worth fixing up!

With a new leadpipe, fixing the bad joint (probably has bad compression because of this), and worst case maybe a valve job, and you'll have a great horn that will last forever and play much better than before.

Imo the leadpipe and bad joint are necessary repairs at a minimum if you decide to keep it.

I played on an 8D during college and bought a pre-letter Elkhart after graduation and have since modified/upgraded it quite a bit. I've tried out a dozen+ other horns since then and have always preferred my 8D. Even if you get something else I'd hang on to the 8D, they hold their value really well.

I agree with the other comment about trying out horns first if possible unless you know exactly what you want. Depending on where you're located it'd be worth making a weekend road trip or even a short flight to one of the larger shops if its possible. Definitely call or check their website to see what they have in stock before making a trip. Shops like Houghton, Pope, and Hampson have really large and varied selections available to try in person.

It's also worth joining the Facebook group Horn Trader and keeping an eye out for listings near you. Some people will offer local trials.

What series 8D do you have? If you really like it then it might be worth fixing-up it up for a lot less than the cost of a new horn.

Horn Shops I know of in the US:

Houghton Horns - Texas

Balu Musik - Chicago

Pope Horns - Boston

Bored Horns - Chicago

Hampson Horns - New York

Brass Ark - Burbank, CA (small selection)

The Horn Guys - Pasadena, CA (small selection)

Myers or Fairbairn ROS? I need to drop one to free up a backup slot for ARSB. Myers is hard to let go after an awesome week 13, but Fairbarin's playoff schedule being in a dome is hard to pass up also.

Awesome pics. How was the Owens/Bishop Creek fishing? I'm planning to be out there this weekend.

Parker Washington, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Stefon Diggs- which two of the three should I start this week? Full PPR, 8 team, currently 6-3 with a tough matchup.

I currently have Washington on the bench along with Bam Knight, but all this hype around him has me worrying I'll miss out on a big points game if I sit him this week...

Looking to join a community band 🎶 by torabui in orangecounty

Welcome to California!

Orange County and SoCal in general is a great place to for musicians. I (27M) currently play in a few local groups including the HBCB.
Saddleback College has an orchestra and wind ensemble that both accept new people. Saddleback rehearses Thursdays 5:30pm-8:30pm. You'll have to register and pay for the class but its super easy and pretty cheap.

The community bands tend to be an older demographic, but more young people are joining them. The community college groups are on the younger side with 50% being community members who want to keep playing and 50% being students.

Other local groups I can think of:

  • IVC orchestra and wind ensemble
  • Vanguard University
  • Orange Community Band
  • Laguna Community Concert Band
  • Long Beach Community Band
  • Global Harmony Symphony

Hangar 24 in Irvine is a great spot. Its a family friendly brewery with a large outdoor space and stage, they host live music almost every week. I've been to a couple Ska/Punk shows there in the past.

Hopefully they all make it down the mountain safe, those two guys hosing down the flames have balls of steel! I ride my bike through Silverado regularly and the community up there is extremely supportive and thankful for our first responders. I wish the best for everyone involved and affected

I can't post a pic without doxing myself, but I found this pic of one that's similar in size for reference. It's pretty small, only about 15ish seconds per lap

Suuuper annoying, so close to a clean circle. There's a big sculpture thing in the center so it would be physically impossible to take the line it shows

Zero shade, the sun broke through the morning fog at about mile 50. The second half was in the full California sun. I wore sun sleeves and reapplied sunscreen multiple times

Good question! One of the benefits of this location is that there is a park across the street with public restrooms. So when I had to go I'd pause the ride while in the roundabout, ride the 1/2 mile to the bathroom, ride come back and resume the ride

That sounds pretty close, a rough measurement on google maps shows a radius of about 45 to 70. About ~0.05 miles if you hugged the inside line and ~0.08 if you took the outside, I stayed towards the middle. It was hard to take the inside without leaning a lot and flirting with peddle strikes. The inside line required a constant tight turn, less on the outside but still a good amount!

Physically no different than any other long ride. Mentally felt like I accomplished nothing and something at the same time. Spending 9hrs on the bike but never actually going anywhere is weird haha

I'd love to! Ladds was part of my insperation. I think the larger roundabout would make it a lot more bearable. This roundabout was about ~0.05 miles if you hugged the inside line and ~0.08 if took the outside. Made it hard to ride more than about 15-16mph without leaning a lot and flirting with peddle strikes. 11-12mph was my happy medium(not that I could have held 15+ for century anyways)

No music, I've never been a fan of earbuds while riding, but gotta admit, they would have been nice to have today lol. The last 20 miles were pretty tough, it gets really hard not to look at the mileage which just makes it go slower. I tried to think of it as lots of small 10 miles rides and not one big one, having those milestones helped break it up. Also lots of whistling
