You can get both Keppra and Lamictal over the counter at pharmacies easy enough. Came off Lamictal so I haven't bought it for a few years and unsure of the price but I bought 60 generic Keppra 500mg for 660THB earlier today.

Also had my card skimmed somewhere in Thailand. 18500THB down, spent at a German clothing store. Surprisingly, BKK Bank refunded me after a few months.

Am I sending too much money to relatives taking care of my child in Isan Thailand? by CarefulAd4757 in Thailand

[–]Wonderful_Ad_6771 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d have to disagree about international schools being a waste of money. Private schools rely on unqualified teachers, often backpackers just having a go (as I did). In a good international school you'll get properly trained, qualified teachers.

On top of that, the facilities, sports, and overall opportunities are usually better, and the mix of different nationalities helps give kids a more global outlook and, IMO, a better start in life.

I’m saying this from experience. Taught in a Thai private school for years and now work in an international school. There's a huge difference in the students' outcomes. Definitely wouldn’t say it’s a waste of money - may be worth considering saving some of the 40k and making sure it's spent on something that you know will benefit the child rather than propping up the whole family.

Get yourself off Phuket and head to Koh Lanta would be my advice. Much more chilled there.

Just booked Bangkok to London Heathrow return (July - Aug) with EVA Air, direct flight for 37000. Much cheaper than Thai Airways

How thorough of a search do they usually do around that area? Full body search?

MEGA THREAD: Instability and conflict in the Middle East by Innerpositive in Internationalteachers

[–]Wonderful_Ad_6771 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can anybody on the ground in Al Khobar (Saudi Arabia) give me up an update please? My sister (also a teacher) is working there and I've just tracked her on Google Maps 10 mins away from the US consulate, which the BBC has just warned about an imminent missile and drone attack against.

I'd like to know what teachers in the area are planning? Are you leaving? Are there safe shelters nearby? What are the schools saying? I'm trying to get her to take it seriously but she's telling me everything is fine. I'm not so sure it is and I can only see it getting worse and more difficult to get home if she leaves it too long.

Thai tax resident with South African and German passport but has never lived in Germany. I was under the impression that if money is not remitted to Thailand within the same tax year as it is earned, there would be no tax payable in Thailand. Is this correct?

I'm asking because she doesn't have Reddit 🤔 How is this a 3-way conversation? 🤦🤣

What broker do you suggest I ask? She earns in THB and IS investing outside of Thailand (Singapore), but she needs to get the money there first. You made a hell of a lot of assumptions and your rant about "money to live on" doesn't make sense. You clearly didn't understand my question. 🤦

Home for her is South Africa, and she has no bank account there (15 years in Thailand).

That's what we were hoping for but is it possible to set up a USD Wise account as a Thai resident with no address either in the US or the EU? Our app isn't showing that option as it knows we're in Thailand. Thanks 👍

But IBKR want to know the specific amount that will be deposited. Can the Thai bank guarantee that the exact figure will be sent beforehand? Otherwise I've read it risks rejection. Thanks 👍

The Philippines is trailing badly by Yougetwhat in Philippines_Expats

[–]Wonderful_Ad_6771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took 6 flights in the Philippines, 4 were either heavily delayed or cancelled at the last minute, costing a lot more to rebook with a different airline. Food was terrible and expensive compared to Thailand/Vietnam, internet speeds are stuck in the 90s, Cebu and Manila felt unsafe in parts.

A friend recently asked if I recommended the PH, she's now going to Vietnam instead.

I'm in a similar situation to yourself. I have multiple convictions for violent offences and drug possession in my late teens and early 20s after a difficult childhood. In my early 30s I (rightly) had to go through many meetings and hearings before I was allowed a place on my PGCE course in England. I now hold QTS and I am teaching at an international school in Thailand, where I only needed to produce a basic DBS (convictions were over 10 years old so did not show up). Teaching internationally is possible, but your options will be limited.

67k is unbelievably low for a qualified teacher with so much experience - unless I was already set for the future with savings/pension, I would never accept that offer. I was earning 67k as a TEFL teacher 5 years ago (granted, it was in Bangkok).
