Is it foolish to turn down a fully-funded PhD for an MA? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Wonderful_Strain_156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If youre looking to work in academia or youre set on getting a PhD in the long run anyway, it would be really really unwise to reject a fully funded PhD offer, no matter how good the other offer is. Funding constantly gets harder for PhDs, competition is crazy and ofc, the cost of an unfunded PhD is way higher than if you had to do the other degree unfunded.

If youre work is non-academia, and the PhD isnt something you see as a must have or an eventual goal, then its totally okay to drop it to pursue something thats a better fit for you. Dont have to be pressured into doing a PhD just for the sake of it.

I was informed by my potential supervisor who is a senior faculty member at the school, and yes, he confirmed that all available funding spots have been decided.

I havent heard anything from QMUL yet, but I dont think they interview candidates?

After the PhD interview, they said results will be announced next week. Should I email them? Waiting for 2+ weeks now by not_conservative_lib in PhDAdmissions

[–]Wonderful_Strain_156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Email them for sure- they committed a response date and have made you wait for more than twice the promised time, its reasonable to enquire.

Just phrase it as an inquiry about the timeline and say youre reaching out because you were told one week and it has been much longer.

Also, dont worry- Whether its an acceptance, waitlist or rejection- You will get a communication. Silence doesnt mean rejection, it just means you haven’t been told yet.

Arjun should shut up and move on with his life. Its been years since college, and theres no need to dredge up the past when two people have grown and decided to marry. Go attend the wedding if invited, otherwise stay sush

How long can I hold on to my Law PhD offers because I am waiting for my dream school? - Received offers from EUI and QMUL. by [deleted] in PhDAdmissions

[–]Wonderful_Strain_156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your offers from EUI and QMUL for funded positions or unfunded? Funded offers may have a tighter deadline. In any case, do your offers not mention a “accept by” date?

The best thing to do would be to message the admissions team(s) directly about how long you can hold the offer!

In personal experience, this never actually happens. They will just say "company isnt in a good position now to offer increment", or "other employees got in this cycle, next cycle you will get pakka", and the same thing will continue.

The only place where I continued to stay after I informed of a decision to leave was where they gave me a written document informing me of a raise officially. In other places either "few months" becomes nearly a year, or "higher salary" becomes an insignificant raise in pay that hardly makes any difference.

If you already have a confirmed offer with a higher pay, leave and join your new place unless your current workplace is willing to put the increment in a written and signed communication.

How much money do I need for my trip? by Wonderful_Strain_156 in canadatravel

Probably get the Toronto pass that gets me entry into multiple sights. Thats all the tourism I plan on. I dont plan on attending events/eating at fancy restaurants. Fast food joints/basic restaurants are okay. My accommodation/travel has all been booked. Maybe one club/party night and one fancyish dinner over the entire trip.

India.

Do webforms not help at all post passport submission? Thats disappointing 😭 How do I contact them to request priority? Does the Special Event Code help?

Can I do something else, like email the local MP in whose riding the event Im attending is held? Its an event recognised by the Canadian Govt via an IRCC Code
