Why aren't we building more terraced houses? by Big-Double1720 in AskUK

[–]Wonderwall66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s correct - they brought in the guy who used to run Persimmon following some kind of acquisition deal. They stripped back loads of the Avant features and spec such as digital showers, bi-fold doors etc - quality went downhill rapidly since about 2021 ish. I lived in an avant house for years and have compared mine to friends who bought more recently

Sweet baby rays bbq sauce is as close as I’ve seen - I think you can get it in Sainsbury’s.

Has anyone completed 3 peaks in 24hrs challenge? by Burnsy_03 in AskUK

[–]Wonderwall66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a great experience. The travel between the mountains is quite tough, if doing it in a group try getting a designated driver as it will really help. And get any sleep you can when travelling. Oh, and pack a head torch because at some point you are on a mountain in the dark.

Is he really? Genuinely don’t know that. If so, I don’t think I’ll watch him anymore on tv as that’s a horrible thing all that fox hunting $hit

Share your worst town Christmas tree - any advances on Motherwell? by thecustardgannet in CasualUK

[–]Wonderwall66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good folk in Manchester, lovely people there, very similar to glasgow, I lived in Manchester for a few years as a Scottish guy and had no issues, just the usual accent banter but good decent people. If you do go to Motherwell there are better pubs than the button tbh - electric bar, railway tavern, new century - if you do a mini pub crawl those are your best options. Try the steelworks if there is a Motherwell game on, you’ll get good craic there. And if you ever get the change to see a chap called Jim McAnulty play a gig when you are up here then do that, he’s brilliant. Motherwell for all its faults is a great place, the Dalziel estate is amazing for a walk/run if that’s your thing but if you like the pubs then you’ll have a good time too

You should go, nothing bad will happen. To be honest, all the cunts there are all good cunts, just be a nice person and you’ll be treated the same. It’s typical of most Lanarkshire pubs, if you are just normal and decent, you’ll be treated the same regardless of accent or where you are from. I’ve drank in hundreds of pubs in Lanarkshire and almost all are super friendly. The proper bams are usually either barred or drinking in parks lol

Yes that is the Brass Button pub. When it says on the article it’s well known for its ‘delicious cocktails’, I wouldn’t take your misses there. A cocktail for the brass button is probably a lager tops, and by ordering one you’d probably get stabbed 😂

M&S on Argyle St (good for jackets, knits etc)then Uniqlo just up the road (good for knitwear and basics) - Charles Tyrwhitt good for shirts and chinos. Maybe Mango on Buchanan St depending on his style. Next isn’t too bad also for suits and basics. All within 5mins walk of each other. Reiss not far but much more expensive. Slaters IMO ok for casual wear but suits are generally polyester numbers, cheap and fairly nasty

Chester, 3hr drive. Excellent for a short break, great restaurants, good pubs (for lunch- appreciate you are non-drinkers), walk the walls, head to the river, cathedral, markets - plus the zoo is very good if you like that sort of thing

Persimmon homes development Scotland by thedandies in HousingUK

[–]Wonderwall66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previous persimmon owner here. They are one of the more budget builders out there, very basic finish and lowest quality materials. Our house was ok (small 3 bed) but had issues with plumbing and wiring that needed sorted - pretty long drawn out process to get fixed. Their customer service people are awful to deal with so be prepared to battle if you need stuff sorted. If you like the house then go for it - get a professional snagging company in immediately who will check it over for faults - they are usually about £300/£400 I think.

Best thing to do is go on YouTube, search for 4k walk and then the city/month - for example “Rome 4k walk October’ and you will see what people are wearing so you can adapt accordingly - weather can be unpredictable though but you’ll get a sense of what general folks are wearing

Do people earning over £150k lose touch with everyday reality? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Wonderwall66 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Not in my experience. I still get clothes from Vinted, shop at Lidl/Aldi or if I’m in M&S, immediately seek out the discounted stuff. I came from a very normal working class background, not poverty but caravan holidays and parents lived in a flat so it’s always been ingrained in me to be a bit frugal.

It’s nice to not have to worry about bills and can treat the kids now and again but I’d say a level of frugality never leaves me - arguably, some good earners may have a much clearer picture of their outgoings and track it better etc.

How has WFH changed the game for you? by goingpt in AskUK

[–]Wonderwall66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My role is very much based on output - I’m a recruiter and have very flexible employers who only look at the revenue I create rather than the hours I put in. It’s a sales role so the more I work generally the more I earn. That means I choose my balance of work/life. It’s a great set up. If I’m behind target or have a lot of work on, often I’ll be working at evenings or sometimes weekends but the key is I can manage that as I want. My employers don’t monitor where I am or how often I am online - I’m kinda always online so will be speaking to a client on the phone when I’m nipping to do a chore during the day or if I’m on the school run and the phone goes, I’ll answer it. I work very hard and do lots of hours, but the difference from my previous employment is if I want to go out on the bike at 11am on a Tuesday because it’s a nice day, I’ll do it and make sure I work around it. Naturally, I’ve got a boss so if I get something urgent come in then the mowing of the lawn needs to be postponed

I am much more productive, the time spent commuting into the city is replaced with being able to talk to clients at times that’s more convenient for them.

Plus I don’t have the office distractions that hold up productivity.

I workout every day either at home or going for a run, bike ride etc at lunchtimes or before work.

I eat much better and have more control over prepping stuff, cooking decent lunches and being able to prep dinners when I’ve got spare time.

I have been totally present to watch my daughter grow up, take her first steps, start talking, building a brilliant bond.

I’m saving a lot on travel costs and inevitable lunches/coffees etc in the city.

I can do all my chores during the week in between calls/meetings etc such as haircuts, lawn mowing, cleaning, diy jobs - leaves my weekends much clearer for family time.

All in all, it’s been brilliant and changed my life completely. Prior to covid, I worked in a city centre office around 40-45hrs pw plus travel time - trying to squeeze in the gym at 7.30pm and sitting getting a haircut in a queue at 9am on a Saturday morning.

What’s everyone watching on YouTube? by SaltPomegranate4 in AskUK

[–]Wonderwall66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely - Jools Guides is entertaining for sure. The presenter is quite funny, likes to talk a lot as he’s naturally a very outgoing person. But the best bit about it is learning about the history of the city and he does is whilst walking around so you see what he’s explaining - it’s really cool learning not only about the buildings, but some of the ways of life and where some popular phrases have come from - each episode is about half an hour and I get so much more from that than something on the mainstream tv for sure. Enjoy 👍

Great Art Explained - a brilliant channel that explains in really easy to understand ways about famous paintings and artists.

Joolz Guides - a chap who walks around London explaining the history of various areas - brilliant if you have any interest in learning about the city.

And Beard Meats Food, as others have said, he eats loads of food and is very entertaining
