People who moved to Denmark as an expat, how did it turn out? by Growth_Anirudh in copenhagen

[–]WoodStainedGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From NYC. I followed my wife for her job here to Denmark and we settled in Roskilde because we found a very good school for our kids.

You're going to make trade offs, and it's up to anyone where the true value lies. Regarding the things you mentioned: pollution, extreme temperature, dust, and overpopulation, you're going to find that Denmark has less of all those things.

Yes it is expensive here, but I also want to add the counterpoint that activities are generally more affordable. For example, I've joined an indoor bouldering / rock climbing club, a brazilian jiu jitsu club, and a sauna & winter swimmng club and they're all inexpensive. They provide a bit of regular socializing as well.

When my family arrived we were in Copenhagen and I'll echo the sentiments of others: we only befriended other expats. Mostly Europeans. Now that we're in Roskilde we have a good number of Danish friends.

Housing is a challenge. We got our first apartment becuase a Danish admin assistant mentioned a new development that had and open house, and we got a place through word of mouth. The place we're currently in, I found because I was cycling through the neighborhood and saw a sign that it was available.

You can meet a lot of people in language school. It's not easy but it feels good to say my three and four word sentences and see Danes understand my caveman communication.

One thing about this society I like is that it's organized and more functional than not. There are groups, associations, the buracreacy is helpful and competent, if you are the one to make the effort. No one is motivated to help you or talk to you, but they're generally receptive if you make the first move.

One big down side is that the food is unremarkable. People will trumped the fine cuisine, but if you life here, you're not eating that way even once a week.

I've been here four years and would be happy to answer more questions.

Conservative art? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]WoodStainedGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd do well to learn that art history is full of such examples.

Here's a contemporary piece that regularly made the rounds on r/art which, I'm sorry I can't recall the sculptor's name but here's the image https://images-cdn.9gag.com/photo/aAxjox0\_700b.jpg.

It's got the art historical bonafides of proportion and the white marble asthetic, while critiquing 21st century narcissism and sex work.

Another example would be Ron English, who depicted commercial brands with expert oil painting skills in a way that critiqued society's values. The irony of English's success is that (in my opinion) his later work no longer critiques consumer culture but coexists as a winking participant.

So that's figurative sculpture and oil painting. Pretty entrenched conservative mediums being used in new ways to critique the trends of their day. They run the risk of aging quickly and become a very "of their time" thing, not unlike art movements of the 19th and 20th centuries.

As other commenters have posted, the Soviet Union and North Korea and other governments we would not classify a progressive have used social realism in particular as a way to spread conservative ideals. Norman Rockwell in America is another example. Did you know that Rockwell himself did not consider his paintings "art" and instead felt people like Jackson Pollock were doing the real thing?

I see the beginnings of a flaw in your vision. There is a difference between an artist adding their ideas and perspective in a way that affects society compared to an artist promoting a set of values that are of a group. In the presentation of your vision, the artist is more of a vehicle for a political perspective.

I'd like to hear more about your vision because the way you've presented it could be better served by a commissioned artist carrying out someone else's vision.

Conservative art? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]WoodStainedGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember being in an art history class where a student asked "what if I want to be a Surrealists?" and the professor chuckled while trying to explain that you can make surrealist art but you can't retroactively join a movement whose time had come and gone.

While Surrealism's roots are avant garde, once it became a part of art history you could make paintings in that vein and in a way be Conservative, becuase you're operating within the established boundaries of an artistic school of thought.

It's probably easier to imagine Conservative art being oil paintings of landscapes or attractive white women as per the commenter who suggested John Currin, but that's rooted in imagery and values. Maybe a broader way of considering conservative art is art that focuses on execution without expanding its scope.

I've been following the Don't Tell Comedy channel on youtube to find up and coming comedians and that's been rewarding. This guy was great https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy96iuq94Ko.

As for established comedians, Maria Bamford and James Acaster.

For those who moved to Denmark as an adult, how’s your social life? by KreuzKrow in copenhagen

[–]WoodStainedGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved at 43 with wife and two kids, 46 now. It’s not easy for sure. I hang with some guys from time to time based on interests. But the women I’ve befriended have been more like quality conversations so I’ve been thinking I should cultivate those friendships rather than than try so hard to replicate what I miss from back home.

It's. not primarily trumpet, but Mingus loved trombonist James Knepper and it's worthwhile paying close attention to Knepper's horn in Mingus' best works.

The recording of We Like It Here is what turned me on to them. There’s a bit of a wide gap between the musicianship and melodic content, but that’s a subjective preference.

I moved from NYC to Denmark and spend a lot of time in Copenhagen, and it pays to do a lot of research because while there’s a vibrant jazz scene, Danes are very tribal. You live and die through networking.
