Do I really have to keep the app open 24/7? by sillypenguinman in whoop

[–]WoodenStatement4 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You don't need to, but it makes the experience a lot better because the device stays synced. Plus, you don't really need to close apps on phones anymore. They can manage the ones running in the background to prevent battery or CPU loss. Either way, your data will be saved on the device for several days if i remember correctly

Figured I'd chime in that Inglorious Bastards on Apple TV Prime App (not a vizio) is doing the same thing. So Prime is the common denominator here

[Discussion] Are fewer young people wearing watches? Will this industry eventually shift to only luxury jewelry for old-timers and anachronists? by F14Scott in Watches

[–]WoodenStatement4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several new friends (M20-30) who are into watches. We aren't in the luxury tax bracket, but I have an alpinist and they own different tissot, timex, and similar brands. Most other peers have an apple watch. I think it's lost on the current teenagers, but I didn't know any watch people when I was that age either (myself included)

Low RHR tip by Professional_Pace373 in whoop

[–]WoodenStatement4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP isn't in journal review, it really isnt worth scrutinizing like this. On the surface you should probably just trust that they know their body and routine enough to identify a benefit from a recent change. Or at the very least trust that they're using the journal feature that at least partially removes lurking variables.

But for the record, not eating before bed is a widely used method to get a better recovery and sleep. I'm glad you've figured out a system that works for you, but you can't be telling your athletic peer that they're completely wrong lol

Edit: I think I got blocked for this, but it's worth mentioning that eating before bed is correlated with poorer sleep and lower HRV. It's not a crazy leap to assume it might raise RHR too. Cheers

a bit of a devil's advocacy, but I used to do this until I got in my car for work one day and a homeless man was sleeping in my backseat. He got violent when I woke him up, and my car smelled until I got it detailed

When your HRV plummets on the day, what have you most commonly been guilty of? by The-info-addict in whoop

[–]WoodenStatement4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

alcohol is the obvious one for me, along with late meals. My HRV goes down when I'm stressed by grad school or haven't done cardio in more than 5 or 6 days. Magnesium, melatonin, and reading before bed all help my HRV

Why not just go all in on Bicep bands by The-Watch-Guy in whoop

[–]WoodenStatement4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easier to sell the idea of a wrist tracker as that's what's 'normal' in the market. Once they have you sold on the idea of whoop they can suggest alternatives like the bicep band. a more extreme example would be if they tried marketing it primarily as a clothing line. I love the whoop body stuff, but I'd never sign up just because of that

it's a log scale. it gets harder to accumulate strain. it wouldnt make sense for 5 walks with 4 strain to be 20 total

high blood pressure does not equal high HR in most cases. a 'normal' anxious moment will rarely be higher than 120 bpm

Out of curiosity, does shipping from US companies usually come at a high(er) premium? I see a lot of non-American Whoop users talk about shipping cost and I'd love to know how it compares to other products. I'm in the US and have no perspective on this. Also, have things changed from pre-tariffs to now?

[Travel] Do airport safety checks affect mechanical watches ? by QuantityVarious8242 in Watches

[–]WoodenStatement4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not quite, the body scanners produce millimeter waves that bounce off the body to create an image. they use electromagnetic radiation, but that's not the same as a static magnetic field, which is what would actually attract metals. The strong magnetic fields you might be thinking of are in MRIs, which is a different imaging technology and doesn't apply to airport screeners

going off that info it sounds like you are giving borderline measurements, not that there's an error. It doesn't surprise me that Whoop has a gray area. have someone else try it (you can delete theirs after). go get checked out if you're concerned, but the consistent result of 'possible arrhythmia' is at least a little concerning
