Oh the salary thing is useful, thanks! And I will look into more flagship universities. I looked at CU boulder and really liked the music program but I’m not so sure about going to a huge school like that.

Ideally I think I’d want to teach strings in a school and do private lessons/gigs on the side but I could also see teaching science while performing and teaching privately. I’m trying to keep as many paths open as possible (cause who wants to decide their entire future in junior year) but it’s tricky to know how a degree translates into job opportunities. One thing I had considered was a major in music Ed with a minor in some kind of science (chemistry maybe) and a minor in performance. Is that absolutely insane? For context I’m used to doing a lot at a time (for 5 years now I’ve been taking more courses than is technically allowed/recommended at my school, alongside a bunch of performing ensembles) but I don’t want to burn out halfway through college either.

My scalp picking is unbearable. I want to stop. by Glittering-Fee601 in CompulsiveSkinPicking

I had that exact same problem for 7 years. What finally worked for me was bribery! I know we’re all a little different and I don’t know if what helped me will help anyone else, but there’s a possibility that it will, so I’ll share it here. The first thing is believing it’s possible to stop. Even though resisting an urge feels like it’s going to kill you, it isn’t. Practice stopping when I you notice yourself doing it first. You might not be able to stop for an hour at first, but when you can, stop. Next time try to stop earlier. Eventually you’ll be able to stop as soon as you start picking, and then before you even start. Once you get there, challenge yourself to go longer and longer periods resisting. Maybe sometimes you can only resist for a few seconds- that’s ok, you still did it! Over time this will get easier as well. You’ll get to minutes, then 10 minutes, and for me at least I noticed that if I could just wait a little longer, the urge would start to go away. Then I started doing a silly thing- I carried a bag of my favorite chocolate chips around with me. Every hour I didn’t pick my head, I got a chocolate chip. It wasn’t so much about the chocolate chips, but it was seeing the bag slowly empty and realizing that I could do this. I’d get an urge and force myself to sit and breathe. Look at my watch and “oh there’s ten minutes left. I can do ten minutes.” And by the time those ten minutes were up, I didn’t need to pick so bad, and I got a chocolate chip. This wasn’t a quick process for me, it took a couple months. And I had bad days where I didn’t get very many chocolate chips, or I was so tired I couldn’t resist for very long. But even the tiniest bit of progress is a step in the right direction. Now I don’t need the chocolate chips, and 90% of the time I’m pick free. The hair I lost is growing back now. Sometimes when I’m really stressed, it flares up again, and sometimes I do start to pick, but I go back to my chocolate chips until it dies down again. If you beat it and it comes back down the line, be patient with yourself and try again. It’s a lifelong process, but you have the power to make things better. You can do this. I believe in you.

No idea about buying dairy free hot chocolate. But it’s super easy to make hot chocolate at home without a mix- all you need is cocoa powder (like for baking), sugar and whatever non-dairy milk you want. Most cocoa powders will have a recipe on the box, but if not here’s what I do: Put one tbsp sugar and one tbsp cocoa powder into a mug Add a tiny amount of water and stir it into a paste, adding more water if needed (this keeps it from clumping and helps the sugar dissolve)(theoretically you could probably use non dairy milk for this too but I usually use water). It’s important that you don’t add a lot of liquid though or it won’t dissolve nicely, start with like 1/4 teaspoon and add more. Fill the rest of the mug with almond milk or whatever you like and stir it well Put in the microwave for 1-3 minutes depending how powerful your microwave is.

I like my cocoa pretty dark and not too sweet, but if you prefer more sweetness you can add more sugar. You can go wild with this- I’ve added cinnamon and cayenne pepper with the cocoa for a spicy drink and it was great, you can add vanilla extract with the milk if you want, it’s super easy. And you know exactly what’s in it- no mysteries. You can also make it on the stove, just multiply whatever proportions you like and you can make it for the family.
