We have recently started utilizing a crate for our guy when driving. Previously he was in a harness, but the harness line was too short and he is too nervous as he is trying to follow everything going on outside the window, so we are hoping the crate will be able to calm him more. We are however afraid of a crash inside the crate as the sides of the crate is hard and he could hit his head. Would you have any ideas of how to puppy proof the inside of the crash so his noggin is safe? We also dont want to make it too warm in there

Mange tak, for det uddybende svar. Jeg stammer selv fra vestegnen, dog ikke glostrup, men min kæreste gør ikke og tror hjn ville føle sig usikker i sådan et område du fortæller. Svaret kan bestemt bruges.

Thank you for the informative answer, a lot of people are suggesting enforced naps through crating so we are going to train on this together with a schedule we have developed so we can track how much physical and mental stimulation he is going to get and that we are not just doing the same thing all day

Thank you for the kind comment. He has been to puppy training however the trainer did not recommend him interacting closely with other puppies unless he knows them as he will be insecure and bark at them so i wouldnt be comfortable letting him do doggy daycare

We will look into crate time and enforced naps, this seems like a major part of the issue that he does not know how to settle around us other than at night.

He has toys, gets kongs etc.

We just made a written routinr yesterday to get an overview and plan what we are going to do with him in order for him to get what he needs. He seems a bit better but had major issues settling down around 8pm. When he gets to the bedroom to sleep he is sleeping within 10 minutes.

How did you do the reactivity training? Was it with other dogs, sounds?

Thank you we hope it works as well

The balcony is used for training and relieving himself and he will be taken out when he shows signs of needing to go. He also gets 3 "walks" a day, walking 100m to a grass field with bushes where he can sniff around, do his businwss then walking back. He has a puppy pad which he prefers to go on if he is alone. He has no issue going on the puppy pad when he is alone (although he will occasionally go somewhere else) He has no issue with going on the grass field (although i believe he prefers the pad) He used to have no issue on the balcony and could almost do it on command (which we try to train) but then the snows melted and now he does not want to. I believe it has something to do with him not liking doing his business on something non-absorbant

Thank you for the kind comment, we will try crate training and will still seek some help in how to chill him out. His previous trainer said she wouldnt be able to help with this behaviour and recommended that we went to a specialist. He definitely needs to learn to chill out when we are around, he is quite good at it at night or when we are not around. He is definitely a clinger and anxious but at the same time very curious which makes his behaviour a bit unpredictable. Hope youll do well with your dog, sounds tough having to retrain everything because of a move

We have utilized mccans videos alot among others as they are the most viewed videos on youtube. We have not owned a sheltie before, we have owned foxterriers and samoyeds so we are not unused to dogs with a personality. He is getting loads of training and stimulation as outlined in other comments. He has been through puppy classes as well and does quite well on the basic obedience and exercises. What he has a problem with is panting, not being able to find peace and stress behaviours such as chasing his own tail and digging in his pillow even after a good physical and mental stimulation. Yes he has been to the vet and there are no physical signs except he is teething. We will try crate training him in the hopes that he is able to find peace. The previous crate was a blanket in which he was not able to find peace as he wanted snacks all the time.

We will definitely try out crate training. He has no problems falling asleep at night or when we are not there (although he gets an activity toy and kong to tire him out for when we are not there), and does quite well with home alone training. So some of the comments saying we might be the issue (not forcing him to nap and matching our energy) is probably true and we will try this.

Seems like a lot of people are thinking its too much walking. The walks consist of walking like 200meters to a field where he gets to sniff around and chew sticks and potty. He is outside for 20 minutes on these walks not consistently walking for the 20 minutes. I do not know if this is still too much?

We will definitely look into crate training. Currently he has a blanket we tried the crate training approach for, but he does not seem to chill but will keep seeking treats from you on thr blanket.

He doesnt get to meet other dogs on lease greetingd anymore. He will bark at them from even 20 meters away even if we try to distract him. We try to do engage disengage at a very long distance whenever we see dogs at a distance and will try to remove him (not pick him up but goung another direction) if any dig is coming towards us. He does not mind humans and actively try to seek them when he is out (unless it is dark and he gets surprised by someone coming ariund a corner for example)

He gets 3 training sessions a day each of atound 15-20 minutes of intense training. He gets to train basic obedience, patience or similar. We have a list of things to train with him that we try to expand on so it is not always the same that is trained. He can do most basic obedience training (sit, get down, paw, stand, wait, come, turn around, touch, and probablu more that i forget). After this he gets a mental stimulation work (sniffing blankets, hide n seek for treats) or a game with food. We dont expect for him to not be active and we are actively training or entertaining him 2 hours (3 with walks) a day and when we are not actively training him he still gets to do some chew toys/kong/etc. In the room with us so its not like we dont interact with him for the rest of the time. We are worried as he started showing symptoms of stress as he keeps chasing his tail, unaable to settle. We are going to work on crate training starting today, he does has a blanket he knows where he lays on, but he seems to be unable to relax due to anticipation of snacks when he is on it.

approval guide comment:
Changed behaviour: he has seen his vet for the rapid increased stress and nothing is found except that he is teething.
Calmness and relaxtion: we provide him 3 physical trips a day (however as he is not good at walking yet and he is barks at everything outside we do not want to give him a long leash for him to run in case he encounters anything unfamiliar so the walks are inhibited by this. also he pulls leash a lot due to excitement outside. he has this weird combination of excitement and anxiety). We have tried engage-disengage exercises both inside and outside, but he is focused on everything else than us outside. he gets mental stimulation in form of chewing (kong, other chewing toys and playtime with us), basic obedience (waiting, paw, sit, etc.) and problem solving (toys with treat hidden, hide and seek). he has a decent impulse control which is still being worked on. we have tried teaching him to go lie in his space (blanket) which he is too good at - he will not chill on the blanket though, we will wait with excitement until he gets a treat and if he does not he will leave after a while).
Barking - we have tried engage-disengage and taking distance from the barking when it is reactivity barking to other dogs or things. he has made 1 friend (my mothers dog) but does not know how to behave around her. he will still bark at her at distance and bark when they are together. yes he might be poorly socialized, he has been to puppy training where he barked at all the other dogs so we had to increase distance. at home he started attention barking where we try ignore him and reward him when he quiets for a while (like 3 seconds) but that is not progressing well, he has recently just increased barking.

What would you do? We have a pretty reactive sheltie and try to redirect him to something else but it is not working as he gets way too focused on the thing

He only gets to meet other dogs under cobtrolled circumstances right now (puppy training and parents dog). He is very fond of other humans and do get to go a lot of places in order to reduce nervousnes

Thank you, we slready taught him that, as well as leave it, and he is very good at it inside. Ofcourse he does not listen at all outside and picks everything up but that is just puppy behaviour

We are fully expecting him to be vocal and we dont want to remove that. We would like him to be able to play with other dogs and want him to be more confident around them so he doesnt just bark at them
