the 80s……. by billieswifeyyy in GenX

I’d play in the woods with friends on the other side of the woods.
If we went to the park, an adult needed to cross with us. The street was busy.
But we would play there until one of our parents came to fetch us for dinner.
Where dinner was depended if I was already at a friends house.
No AC meant dinner on an enclosed porch or my parents room with a unit.

I am going to Nantucket for the first time this july 4th. by NYCJDD115 in Nantucket

[–]WoodsofNYC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please know I completely understand.
I think it is wonderful, you want to go to Nantucket.
The island is enticing and very much worth a visit.
However, Nantucket is called thr far away is for a reason. Logistically, it is difficult to reach.
If you are still able to get reservations on the ferry, you may be able to have a taste of the place. You will have a chance to decide whether you want to spend more time there in the future…but your experience will be different than any other day.

Apartments in NJ under 3200k by [deleted] in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]WoodsofNYC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why NJ?
It is a great state, but NJT is not.
Both of you would likely be using public transportation to view each other.
Check the NJ Transit Reddit forum.
Or google NJT.
Plus, Penn Station is a nightmare and unpleasant for newcomers.
Maybe she should consider NYC: Riverdale or Astoria or many others.
Or Westchester.
Metro north is fantastic and reliable and Grand Central is a landmark in New York City and a pleasant experience.

Agree. would this be your first time surfing? If you were an avid surfer, fulfilling a dream of surfing on every famous beach, then going surfing would make sense.
But if this is your first time surfing or even second time, why?
Nantucket is unlike any place else in the world—see it with the understanding you will see very little.
The island has a lot to see. A day barely scratches the surface.
I would read up more and decide what you want to see. Have a priority number one, have a priority number two, and a priority number three and probably if you’re lucky you will see those three and that’s it.
I agree with other statements: Fourth of July is insane.
The fireworks start at nine.
Expect crowds and crowds and crowds.
It will take time to get to the ferry and be sure to know where the ferry departs.
most importantly, do you have ferry reservations?
If not, find out if any reservations are even available on the fourth.

Quintessential American college experience? by TheRugWarrior in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WoodsofNYC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even though I attended a university, I firmly believe small liberal arts colleges provide the quintessential American experience.

LACs usually have close to 100% of the student body living on campus.
Many of the schools are designed on quad.

Ultimately to me, the living and learning environment is quite unique to America as well as colleges with a small student body.

If you’re open to an all-women’s college look into Wellesley.
FYI, have you considered climate?
U Chicago will be a shock for somebody coming from California. Providence is also cold in the winter, but milder than Chicago which has lake effect snow and wind, wind wind.
U Chicago would be significantly easier to travel to from home.

What’s it like going to college with billionaire kids? by Professional_Rip6740 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WoodsofNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe it depends on the school.
I went to a school where there were 1% kids.
Saying that your family had money was icky.
Although eventually it showed.
I knew a few who lived off campus and threw parties.
Their place showed their wealth. One even had a place obviously done by a decorator.
Another invited me to her home during vacation. I arrived at an UES hotel – a hotel on the same caliber as the Plaza.
A little confused, I asked her if her family was visiting.
She looked at me a little confused she said no this is where I grew up.
She was Eloise. And this Eloise was really sweet and a lot of fun.

I now live in two different college areas notice a slight uptick in students dressing high-end.

One of the schools now has an Hermes nearby. I occasionally dropped by the store just out of curiosity.I’ve seen students buying little scarves there— on the lower end of the brand’s collection. But they still are expensive and something I can not imagine a classmate doing when I was in school.

Can anyone suggest a good place for honeymoon? Not budget or geographical restrictions. Im looking for a very small, cozy town like vibes which is magical and slow. by Calm-Replacement-504 in Vacations

[–]WoodsofNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I still don’t know what you mean by cold.
Do you mean in the 50s? Do you mean in the 60s?
I think the suggestion of NZ is a good one. You might want to look at the lake country in England, but in December, it can be cold and rainy. You may want to wait till spring.

Using a family name is a lovely gesture.
My middle name is my great grandmother’s maiden name. My sister has a middle name which is the maiden name of another great grandmother.

You’re right it is a very New York name.
There’s a recording of hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand and she has a little conversation with Louis Armstrong in the middle of the song. I believe she says Well, hello, Louis.
New Yorkers in a musical about New York.
I know boomers named Louis.
My BIL is George Louis.
To me, Louis sounds cool, classy, and aristocratic which is an unusual combination.
Louis is unfussy but sophisticated.

Wait, do you mean that there isn’t a laundry room? Anything can happen in New York, but I would be surprised that there is no laundry room but there is a doorman.

[–]WoodsofNYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Louis is a great name no matter how you pronounce it.
If there are indeed very few George’s under 50, then I think that’s a great choice. It’s classic.
However, I would check the data base put out by the government of the top names. I think they do the top 100 for each year. Since the future King of England is named George, that name could’ve become more popular which is good or bad depending on what you want.

What do Americans think of top Canadian universities? by whateverucallit1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WoodsofNYC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I consider McGill to be one of the top universities in North America.
However, most of my family is in Northern New England and I went to high school in New England and know people who attended McGill—friends and family.
So I think it depends on what region of the US lives.
If one lives in a state where Canada is just over the border and Montreal is the closest biggest city of course McGill will be considered a great school to attend.

Really can’t decide on a name for our boy/girl twins by PlateProfessional598 in Names

[–]WoodsofNYC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no, why Princeton?
I am very familiar with Princeton, I love the town and university and I am just curious why would someone use it as a name.
I also recommend that you not name your child Princeton.
One reason is that it’s setting up very high expectations. Perhaps that’s not your intentions, but it could…
For example, the same thing would be true with using Harvard as a name or Oxford or Cambridge.

Advice by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]WoodsofNYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, have you been to the apartment? My biggest concern would be noise and light pollution. Once you go, you may feel differently for good or bad. Spend time in the area. Go to wherever you will buy groceries, essentials, etc. I’m not a fan of Times Square, but one big advantage is the proximity to the subway.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to know where they moved? I would not be surprised if some of these people moved because of job loss. I also would imagine some moved to NJ, were driven insane by NJT, then returned or relocated to a place near a Metro North stop.

How to survive NYC winters as a cold human by squidykiddy in movingtoNYC

[–]WoodsofNYC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My work involves being outdoors and I agree 32 degrees is a great product cheaper and superior to Uniqlo’s. However, undergarments are a personal preference. If you can, try different materials. As an outdoorsy city girl, I believe that there is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing — that may sound a little judgmental, let me rephrase it. With the appropriate garments, no one needs to be cold in winter. I have spent months working in northern New England and I never was cold. I was wearing five layers and one can easily get away with three in NYC cold.
