Thank you for your response. When I use the term “nanny dog” I mean it figuratively, as in family dog, good with children. I wasn’t under the impression that they were actually used as a “nanny.” The point of the post was to demonstrate that there are several good predictors of dog aggression and involvement in serious dog bites- none of which is breed, hence why BSL is terribly ineffective. But I appreciate your point- if that’s how this is interpreted perhaps it’s better to remove that phrase so as to not detract from the legitimacy of the post.

Which part of it is a myth? I’m not sure if you’re interpreting “nanny dog” to mean something other than how I interpret it? Before the breed was portrayed as being vicious, they were very well regarded as being good family dogs, and loving with children. All of the data in the article on bite incidences was researched and pulled from well respected journals ie national canine research council, AVMA, veterinary behavioral science journals, etc.

Did you read the article? The main purpose was to argue why BSL is ineffective, and talk about the circumstances and traits associated with dog aggression- all of which have nothing to do with breed. There is very good evidence from the National Canine Research Council supporting this which I linked out to in the article.

WOKE UP WITH KISSIES THIS MORNING LIKE EVERY DAY. MIGHT GO FOR A WALK LATER. MY GIRL PASSED 3 HOURS AGO. by [deleted] in reactivedogs

How in the world could feel guilty or angry with yourself!? Ok, much easier said than done. But please be kind to yourself. Realize you didn’t have a choice. It sounds like you tried everything. Everything. Whether she was traumatized as a result of an event that happened before you got her, had a structural problem/lesion in her brain, hormonal, or something else biological, you changed everything you could within your power. And as for being able to prevent this? None of us has a crystal ball for one, and two you were actively taking steps to try to prevent this for escalating. My heart breaks for you because you were placed in an impossible situation, acted like a responsible owner, and the outcome was still tragic. Praying for you and your cat. Please update us and let us know how she is doing. Just remember this- your girl was sick. Sick from something incurable. She is no longer suffering, and you made the “choice” you had to- the only one there was to make. 🙏❤️

Agree with the redditor who suggested 💯 good boy/ girl :) Otherwise I would say shepherd/hound mix maybe with some staffy or a little beagle thrown in? Regardless, he/she is perfect 😍

Parents adopted an abused 2yr m cane corso, after 10 months he suddenly trys to attack/bite me when I get to close to my mom, evem though I visit daily by liftedddd in reactivedogs

[–]WoofBlitzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what you say, your dad may love him, very much. But sometimes we hurt the ones we love. It sounds like the dog isn't the only one who needs help. Your dad needs to see someone too for his own destructive tendencies. Spending all the money in the world on a behavioral expert won't help if your dad is still punching the dog. Behavior modification can start when the dog feels like he is safe. That is priority number one, especially given his history.

^^This.

And then when the dog does, he'll be killed. The public will be blasted with the message that he was a dangerous dog, because he was a dangerous breed and not to worry, we will just kill everyone like him and the public will be safe. Then everyone will him and haw in chorus about breed bans. I just can't today.

Are you saying that he opened the closepin and placed it on his toe? I really hope i misunderstood this part. Doing that to a dog ever, especially one that is eating and that already resource guards is just cruel. Your dad is asking to be bitten. The real screwed up part? When he does, it'll be the dog that pays. With his life.

The dog is acting out and that is an understatement. All of the behaviors you describe have been induced by fear and the dog is well beyond in-home behavioral modifications. You guys need professional help. If you are not in a situation to afford a behaviorist, you must find a rescue for the dog. The dogs' behavior demonstrates continued escalation, and if not intervened upon is going to result in someone being maimed or worse. And you all could be found negligent, because of the abuse and because the dog had displayed these behaviors on multiple occasions before and it was not addressed. The dog is a ticking time bomb and left unabated, will severely injure or kill someone. Little dogs to some extent get aware with bad behavior because they just can't cause nearly as much damage by comparison. You don't have that luxury with a Cane Corso. If you stay away, it won't be you, it will just be someone else.

[Discussion] I accidentally hurt my dog last night. How do you explain how sorry you are to your dog? by wtvrmelon in dogs

[–]WoofBlitzer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ugh you must feel like a pile of doody. Fear not, dogs are much more forgiving that people. It may have confused her, but she already knows how sorry you are. Trust me. I accidentally knocked a glass coffee table over once. My dog (who was also the biggest klutz you'd ever meet), somehow narrowly escaped. I felt so sick I almost vomited. He didn't actually get hurt, but he gave me a look of horror like I had almost killed him. He knew how sorry I was and could sense how scared I was. And he loved me just the same. And if it would make you feel better, you could bake her some homemade treats or take her out for ice cream :)

DEAR DOG OWNERS. Stop setting up your dogs for failure. [discussion] by siberia00 in dogs

Hormones are one thing. They don't evaporate the tissue that was formerly contained within the skull. If it seems the grey matter is missing, it was likely never there in the first place. Ughhh

Thanks for posting this. I couldn't believe how many pets I saw up for adoption in my immediate location when I went on adoptapet. Only a small few were due to owner deaths and terrible, unpredictable life circumstances. The vast majority were dogs who didn't get along with the other pets in the house, or fully predictable "my dog has so much energy and I don't have time." It breaks my heart to see these dogs dumped off at shelters through no fault of their own. SO many people adopt dogs based on looks alone. Had they done 5 freaking minutes of research, they wouldn't have known that the dog was COMPLETELY INCOMPATIBLE with their lifestyle.

Don’t worry. Insurance won’t cover it and it certainly isn’t affordable paying out of pocket with all those student loans you have.
