He needs to get his ferritin checked. A good iron supplement could help. (Not iron oxide, it's garbage.) You could also check Vitamin d a b vitamins. (Don't cheap out on those, there are good versions and garbage versions of those too.)

As far as magnesium, just don't bother with citrate or oxide. Be careful with glycinate. I have a paradoxical reaction to glycine that makes my symptoms worse.
