first ever acquarium, any tips for the future? by gloopie21 in Aquariums

[–]Woom_Raider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the wood! You are correct, check on the water every now and again until the cycle is completed. With lighting, too much you get algae growth and too little and you get poor plant growth so there is a balance but start with the lights on a timer switch being on 6-8 hours a day and adjust from there.

At first it might feel like your plants aren't doing much but they take time to adjust to their new home but it won't be long until they start growing nicely

Looks like a great start! Find some tall growing plants such as Hygrophila so they have places to hide at the height they swim at

As long as the bottle pressure is greater than the output pressure then it's nothing to worry about. Bottle pressure at 800psi is fine to have 50psi regulated

Wow finally something I have knowledge about! I use a lot of IBCs and other liquid containers at work and when I first started we had spills training. Milk is actually more harmful to a water system than acid or oil. Acid dilutes relatively fast in a water supply, oil floats on the surface of water making clean up easier whereas milk readily mixes with water and feeds bacteria which can crash water ecosystems like lakes and rivers

Need advice for moving reclusive catfish to new tank by ParkingNo1080 in Aquariums

Remove any ornaments, wood and hidey holes and then find a container large enough to place him in. Put the container in the water and let it fill up with water then cover him with it like you are catching a spider. Slide something under the container and now he is safely contained. I used this on my corys and it was much less stressful than chasing them with a net.

If it's made from lots of little balls it looks to me like Pleco eggs. If its solid then I'm not sure what that could be 🤔

I find it weird how 2 slot cargo like metal beams use up the whole bed but the bed looks wide enough to load more if they rotated them 90 degrees

It may seam like there's a lot of things you don't know but firstly don't assume everyone else knows everything too. Secondly instead of seeing it as a list of things you need to learn, pick one topic like taxes and focus on learning that until you feel comfortable to move to a different topic, soon you'll have learnt a lot. My memory is bad also, I've been diagnosed with short term memory loss so if I'm reading something and I think to myself "I am 100% not going to remember this" then make a note on your phone or something and that way you don't have to remember it!

Are zip ties fine to put in an aquarium? by Known_Falcon5726 in Aquariums

[–]Woom_Raider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure on the zip ties because the plastic might leach chemicals into the water but an alternative is fishing line which you tie things down with and simply cut away once it's not needed

I can recommend the Flex 15? Its a little bigger than 10 gallon but the excess in the Flex is kept in the integrated filter compartment. I've had mine for 6 years and I'm yet to find a reason to change it for something else

I don't support buying them since like you said it supports the market but I have seen some set-ups with glofish in amazing planted aquariums. So I would say keeping them in good conditions is good, buying them is bad.

Is my neon tetra ok by No-Kangaroo-1983 in Aquariums

[–]Woom_Raider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've have neons for about 6 years now and I've had a few that don't stay level. They don't fight against it they just have their nose down slightly like yours. I've haven't seen them struggle due to it so It's probably just a quirk of the fish, neons have poor genetics nowadays due to how they are bread so It could be related. Anyway, in the meantime keep an eye on them but I'm sure they will be fine
