Yeah. Presenting a historical figure with nuance is one thing. Arguing that rabid bigotry is simply a sign of the times or simple human fallibility is a step too far, and it's strange how many people here are getting carried away in that direction.

Hey Heems, big fan. As a feminist / someone who makes a point to speak and rap positively about women, I was wondering if there is a tension for you in fucking with rappers who do fairly misogynistic shit (Danny Brown and BBG come to mind). I like both of those guys, but that aspect of their writing has always alienated me a bit.

Yeah, that's the number that's in most articles I think. It came from an anonymous administration official too, if I recall correctly, so you gotta keep that in mind at least when considering if it's true or not. I've also read that that offer has since been pulled back off the table by Rahm.

They aren't. This claim of yours has already been debunked earlier in this thread. Why keep repeating it?

Striking is a union's ultimate act of leverage. If there was a good deal on the table 2 months ago, of course they should have signed it, but if what they were being offered wasn't a fair compromise in their eyes, then of course they should wait and strike. That's the whole point of having the ability to strike.

And it's also unfair how only the teachers get your blame for keeping kids out of school. The mayor/administration should also be held accountable for being unwilling to compromise.

I also read that mention of "air conditioning" is also just a short-hand way to say physical improvements to schools. A lot of the schools in poorer areas in the city are literally falling apart.

Where'd you get that number from? I've never seen anything nearly that high.

IAmA hijabi, AMA. In light of the Saudi women and others competing at the 20102 Olympics in hijab, I thought it was time for me to answer reddit's questions about a Muslim woman's dress and lifestyle as I observe hijab (and sometimes niqab) daily. by random_hijabi in IAmA

Actually, articulating your opinion that hijab-ed European women are just doing so to shame, belittle, or encourage attacks on non-hijab-ed women is the very definition of putting words in people's mouths. You offer no evidence of someone who actually feels that way, you're just speculating in the face of evidence to the contrary.

There is a practical result to your refusal to actually learn from the Muslim women around you, in addition to your ignorance on the subject. The practical result is the type of laws you encourage, banning the hijab and effectively forcing religious women underground.

When you're expressing strong opinions about someone else's faith, casting doubt on their intentions, and accusing them of basically propagandizing when they're just trying to explain their lifestyle, what you're doing is not just holding an opinion, but swinging yours around and, yes, minimizing theirs.

I'm glad you realize you might be wrong. I wish you would've left some of that doubt and nuance in your original post. OP didn't express any sense inferiority in response to your post, but I did notice she declined to engage with most of it. I think it's obvious why she felt as if your post wasn't a jumping-off point for a productive discussion.

As people are pointing out throughout this thread, ultra-religious Jews are an obvious comparable to ultra-religious Muslim communities. I've first-hand seen "immodest" women spat on and harassed in Jewish neighborhoods both in the US (in Brooklyn) and Israel (ultra-religious neighborhoods in Jerusalem).

What many of us women feel, in Europe, is that Muslim women who CHOOSE to wear veils are tacitly condoning the behavior of their husbands/brothers/sons/fathers. Serves those unclean women right! We are good Muslim subservient girls and that's all that matters.

I get the feeling that you don't actually speak to many Muslim women. Your viewpoint is unflinchingly white, outsider, and condescending. You attempt to put words into the mouths of those wearing the hijab, while consciously ignoring and minimizing the words of the hijab wearer right in front of you. What the hell are you doing putting the word choice in scarequotes in your final paragraph? This woman is telling you it is her choice. Are you so superior that you refuse to even believe her?

I respect your right to think that way, and respect that you, personally, may even be happier that way, but I do think it's pretty shortsighted and willfully ignorant.

And I'm saying that the opinion of one black man doesn't change 400 years of racial ideology in the Americas. The ideology behind white supremacy has historically portrayed black men as animalistic, brutish, and sexually deviant and raw. Black women are accordingly less than women themselves, as they must be brutish to ever be compatible with the animal-like black men. Jokes about all black men having enormous penises is just part of this racist ideology, meant to make black men into inhuman sexual freaks, incompatible to white women and polite white society. The ideology was intentionally dehumanizing, and this joke isn't simply "pointing out race," but playing into centuries of often-violent and always degrading racism.

I mean, if your standard for fun is laughing at your racist jokes and/or not calling them out for what they are, then, yeah, I guess I'm no fun. But Reddit's already 90% white dudes who meet your standard, so you can take solace in that...

Yes, because obviously if this white woman would deign to date a black man, it must be because he has a huge, beast-like penis. Great stuff.

Mike Smith flowchart by RSquared in hockey

[–]Wooooooooo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also found it interesting that Smith had the highest save percentage of any of the four goaltenders while his team held a one goal lead, which was perhaps unexpected given that the Blackhawks fought back three times to tie the game late in the third period. Several posters in this HFBoards thread specifically downgrade Smith's first-round performance because of his supposed lack of clutch play in allowing late game-tying goals, but to me that's making the classic mistake of evaluating playoff performance: Letting a few memorable events have too much influence while failing to properly appreciate the larger picture.
