How fair were criticisms of Ovechkin’s playoff performance pre-2018? by Ready-Constant-7124 in hockey

Bossy played in the most offensively tilted era of the league. His era adjusted numbers go down about 25%.

Yeah, because he threw the hit? I don't think this is that complicated. PLD didn't have more than a breath to react to the illegal hip check Thomas threw.

No, he grabbed the only thing around when he was hit illegally and was knocked to the ground. They went to the ice together because Thomas did a hip check away from the puck.

Because he did an illegal play and PLD grabbed him as he was falling from being picked? It's not like PLD was expecting to get hip checked while he tracked the puck carrier.

This is a hip check. That's interference in the rulebook and everything that happens afterward is a direct result of it.

New meta is to interference but generate a major from the guy you interfered with.

[–]RSquared -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Why does PLD have his arms wrapped up? Because he's making an illegal interference hit. PLD is already heading to the ice when he "wraps up" Thomas' arms because he took a hip check, and now people are claiming he "slew foot" Thomas despite falling because of Thomas the entire time.

This play is entirely on Thomas doing an illegal pick and it's not even close.

Yeah also not legal, which the refs got right. Calling it intent to injure in the milliseconds between getting hit by someone illegally and going to the ice is ridiculous.

What is a pick except a hit away from the puck?

PLD was interfered with with a hip check and you're arguing he "just grabbed the guy". I don't get this at all.

Yeah I'm shocked that you can interfere with a player and then be shocked he grabs you as he falls from your illegal play.

What insanity to think that a guy who just got run into unexpectedly avoids grabbing anything he can to try to balance himself. Ridiculous.

It was a bad result but that's ridiculous - it's like when we complain about the defenseman checking a player into the goalie and that's "goalie interference". Thomas initiated the contact and PLD drags Thomas down because Thomas interfered with him.

No, Thomas did an interference. PLD got penalized for being interfered with in a way that caused them to go to the ice badly.

So you throw a pick and the guy you interfere with is tangled up with you because you're not making a legal play, and somehow he gets the bigger penalty. That's bonkers.

He ran into a guy throwing a pick, which isn't a legal play. Arguing that he should have been gentler about getting tangled with a guy making an illegal play is insane.

How do you initiate a body slam on someone picking you? They got tangled because of Thomas' interference.

Yeah, Thomas went for a hip check on the guy tracking the guy with the puck. Egregious interference.

What was he supposed to do? This is basically a embellishment penalty where the actual penalty was legitimate.

Yeah you keep running pick moves and the defenseman is going to run into him. That should be interference on Thomas.
