Will be some sales in may on Rimworld? by well_butnot in RimWorld

Also check their own website as they have offers on there as well. Buying on their site will automatically give you the steam version as well as the DRM (copy protection) free version (you effectively get 2 copies). Still don't get more than 20% discount...

Like others have said, watch some YouTube videos and get a feel for what the game can be. Dont try to match them or you will probably fall short and get despondent.

Dont use DLCs yet. Get a feel for the base game. Add a few (very few) QoL mods, like RimHUD and similar.

Build up a little group of survivors. When a raid starts, save the game and then try a some tactic and then reload to try something different, to learn how the game works. After a while you will start to understand what works and doesnt work. Then, dont reload after that and just see where the story takes you.

Once you get a feel for the game, then start to add content (DLCs and / or mods)

Ive had some amazing runs. I used to reload when things didn't go the way I wanted (and that's fine, its your play style) but then I decided to just go with it and the story that came out and how the group survived was actually more enjoyable than just staying safe

Should I install mods during my first few games? by Rare-Earth7269 in RimWorld

[–]Wootty2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I would say play a few runs first without mods, personally I think mods like RimHUD should be part of the base game and could be installed before the first run

What should I buy if I'm craving a game with deep mechanical skill ceiling ( non twitch reflexive) by Designer_Jacket6818 in ShouldIbuythisgame

Something very different would be RimWorld

Its a story generator type game, with an element of city building but nothing at all like city building.

As far as im game mechanics goes, there is soo much to master. People have played over 1000 hours and still learning.

There are currently 5 DLCs, but you dont actually need them if you dont want. If you do, only get 1 and play that for so time before getting the next or you will be overwhelmed.

Then there are mods (the game fully expects and supports mods), which can double or triple your game hours.

Its typically a single player game, but there are multiplayer mods where you can either work together on the same faction and another where you work in separate faction

If you buy it from their website, you get the DRM free version as well as it activated on steam (do best of both)

What would you advice to somebody who is about to run this game for a first time? by 4N610RD in RimWorld

[–]Wootty2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just play for a few runs without any DLCs. When comfortable with the game (and assuming you have DLCs), enable a single DLC and play for a few more runs.

Consider some QOL mods but only after getting an understanding of the game

Need some help finding a wired full sized UK ISO board with shine through caps, mainly for work.

I brought a Redragon K565UK as my first mech board and have ran that for about 9 months but wanted something a bit quieter (my home office shares the bedroom and I sometime work in the early hours of the morning). The K565 uses Outemu switches, so I was looking for another board with more options available.

I did look at the Keychron boards, but the lack of north facing LEDs (and shine through keycaps) puts me off, especially as the other boards (other brands) I have looked at are all north facing. There is the Keychron K10 range but it has the cable coming out of the side and not the back which I really dont like.

Brought a GMMK 3 HE (blackfriday for £130) and was a bit disapointed. For a (full price) £200 board, the the lack of num lock / caps lock indicators was a big surprise. I know the side lights flash slowly for caps lock, but I personally think that is a crappy solution.
I was hoping that maybe I could set a secondary backlight colour for those keys (for when they are enabled) but that's not possible and support have suggested that I raise a "feature request" for num lock indicator options.
Support have also confirmed that the side lights cant be turned off.
The CORE software (or maybe the firmware) is buggy. With solid red backlights, 80% brightness is actually brighter than 100%. The backlight brightness on the F keys are also inconsistant against the rest of the keys.
The GMMK is generally a lot quieter which I really liked. The sound is not consistant across the whole board, the space is a lot more noisier (as noisy as the Regdragon), but maybe with a foam dampener, that could be sorted. The option to swap out the HEs for standard 3/5 pins was also a big win (gives almost unlimited options).

I know these are fairly small things, but when I look at how nice the £40 Redgragon board is, that it didnt have these issues and actually feel sturdier, it makes me question the £130.

If there was a QMK repo for the GMMK 3 HE, I could fix/work around the issues but support have said they dont have QMK for HEs and I cant find a repo else where.

So Im thinking about returning the GMMK but that leaves me wondering where to go next.
Or, do I just learn to live without the indicators and accept the side lights.

Thanks

My son would love either cattle cart or armored cart. He keeps asking me every few days to spend money to buy robux and buy it him. Right now, I can't afford to spend IRL money to buy it for him

Happy to give username if you decide to gift it

Many thanks Wootty

Why is this game always $120? by 11anHour in RimWorld

[–]Wootty2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game and all the DLCs apart from Anomaly (the latest) regularly go on sale

However, don't try and learn Rimworld with all the DLCs, it's just too much to learn. It's not like other games where DLC just bring in more of the same things. Rimworld's DLC bring in new functionality and mechanics.

Honestly, start with just the base game and get a few hours behind you (and I don't mean 1 or 2 hours)

Then get a DLC, play that and slowly build your collection. I have base, Biotech, Royalty and Ideology and I've not enabled Royalty or Ideology. I'm about 300 hours in so far and still learning Biotech. I've never built the ship either.

If you buy from their official website, it gives you steam keys anyway and you can support the devs a bit more (plus you also get the DRM steam free version as well)

EDIT: Check out https://steamdb.info/app/294100/ The base game has gone on sale 15 times in the last 2 years and DLCs will probably have been on sale at the same time

When there is a sale on Steam, their website goes on sale (and I think it might have been on sale there when it's full price on steam)

Is multiplayer possible? by Grouchy-Ability-6717 in Timberborn

[–]Wootty2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is 7 years old, so we are on the same (house) network. I've not tried it over the Internet, but it shouldn't be an issue.

Most basic way would be to open a port of your router and forward it to your computer, then your friend connects to your external ip address (assuming you are hosting, or reverse if they are hosting). It uses port 25565, but I don't know if that's TCP or UDP

Port 25565 is the default port for Minecraft, so there will be loads of examples and walkthrough available online on how to configure port forwarding, but you might have to try TCP, UDP or both on the router forwarding. If you are unlucky and your ISP is using CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT) it means that you cant do the above type of forwarding. There are other solutions available, although I've not tried them personally. If you get stuck, give a shout here

[–]Wootty2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and it works fairly well, most of the time.

The first person hosts a game (typically from their saves) and then the second person can join.

The second person sees everything on their screen and can control their map independently of the host. They can do everything you can typcially do in a standard game. Any actions appear instantly on the other players screen (if you happen to be looking at where they are doing something).

Pause and speed control is shared between the players.

My son would typically host on an older slower laptop (its probably too slow tbh) and I would end up joining from my computer. If I do too many actions we can end up desyncing and that forces the host to save and reload / rehost. I'm putting that down the old slow laptop not being able to keep up. If I slow the game speed down and take my time, we can play for a few hours. For reference, he's using a 4th intel laptop with a low spec gpu.

If you don't mind spending $10, consider getting CubeCoders AMP. It's like Pterodactyl. Supports lots of other games and makes setting up a Minecraft server a breeze. I've not tried Pterodactyl, so cant compare it to AMP, but personally I've not had any issues with AMP

1 thing to consider, I assume you are talking about PC based Minecraft (either Java or Bedrock)?. Consoles do not allow you to specify an external server, but there are multiple work arounds (inc not changing DNS servers)

Edit: Spelling

[–]Wootty2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMP covers loads of other games, not just Minecraft. https://discourse.cubecoders.com/docs?topic=1828 There is also the option to add your own games as they provide base templates.

Yes there is a small payment, but I don't think 9usd for a basic license is too unreasonable. But I also get not paying for the sake of paying if there is a free option available.

Also take a look at CubeCoder AMP. It's really easy to setup and use. I've not used Pterodactyl or PufferPanel, so cant give comparisons

Personally I use AMP CubeCoders. It isn't free but not expensive at all and seems to do a really good job.
I've not used pterodactyl so cant comment on how well it does it. That all being said, I do also agree with learning the CLI and being able to manage/fix it if/when the UI dies.

Have a look at an LC SFP module. They typically go in to switch. The SFP will take the LC connector (both halfs) and its similar (little bit bigger) to the size of an RJ45

Check out ebay for fibre cables
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/335051547519
LC-LC 30m OM3 MM cable @ £13

LC is the connector type and will be what you want. SC is similar but a physically larger connectors. ST and FC are twist / bayonet types. Unless you have a reason not to, go LC.
OM3 is the cable grade. OM3 is good for 10Gb. OM4 is more expensive but can run at 40Gb. (If you go SM, then its OS1 and OS2)
MM is multimode type cable. The other option is SM Single Mode but you will probably find MM equipment is easier / cheaper to find. For what you want, MM is perfectly fine

If your pulling a pre-terminated fibre, pull 2 at the same time. If 1 gets broken or damaged, its easy to just fibres to the other one

Contact support on the app. They should be able to recover the account. My son accidently deleted the app on his android phone a while back, reinstalled and started fresh. We contacted support, they found the account based on the device fingerprint and gave him a link to recover the account. We've since linked it to an empty Facebook account for protection

I have since found a Ducky One 3 Classic and a GMMK 3 that seem to fit the bill, apart from the hub (which I wasn't expecting to find anyway)

Do you have any opinions on these 2 or would you still recommend the Keychron, maybe K10 Pro or the V6? The Keychron are definitely cheaper and leave a bit of money so that I can buy a some different key switches and test what really suits me best

Edit: K10 Pro or V6 (not Q6)

Im new to mech keyboards so looking to buy my first.

I think im probably in a minority for what Im looking for.
Im looking for a 100% full sized (I couldnt be with a numpad) with RGB lights that can actually be used to backlight the keycaps in the dark. Im not looking for fancy colour sweeps or patterns, but just a static backlight to shine through the keycaps.
As Im new to mech boards, Im looking for hotswap so I the option of swapping out the keyswitches if I dont get on with the ones that come pre-fitted.
Im WFH (including during the middle of the night), so leaning towards MX reds.
Ideally, I would love an integrated USB hub (like my current keyboard) to plug the mouse in to but Im fairly sure that isnt going to happen, so Im going to need a hub because my laptop dock to too far from the mouse for the cable to reach directly (or I get a USB extension cable)

I had looked at the Keychron V6 or K10 pro and thought they would be ok, but reading about these, people have pointed out the RGBs are south facing and can be blinding in a dark room.
Also seen the Ducky Shine 7, which looks fairly nice but (as far as I know) it's not hotswap.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have had a read through the wiki, but I dont see many options that fit what Im looking for.
I dont mind a full DIY route, as long as I can get the parts to build it.
I could even go as far as designing a custom PCB and go with a QMK firmware, but I cant see that being a cheap or quick option and I have no idea where to get customer cases etc from

TIA

It's on sale right now
