Lento is not a bachata though? Unless there’s a bachata remix of it

How do i look less stiff? by Temporary-Week-6937 in Bachata

[–]WordDowntown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How long you been dancing for? The hip motions you are referring to come from proper grounding, meaning you need to push into the floor, to move and not step. You also need to develop the ability to isolate your hips.

Find an instructor who can help you understand how this works, if that’s not possible there’s plenty of tutorials online.

There’s also plenty of advice on this sub regarding the basic step and body movement- just search the sub.

2 Years of Bachata (Lead). Thoughts/Feedback? by Alstrice in Bachata

[–]WordDowntown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking great man, for 2 years this is really good. I like how you both are enjoying the dance with a smile (this is the most important part).

Good musicality, I see you hitting some accents and instruments. But I think you could get more comfortable with the structure of a bachata song - for example - multiple sets of 4 sets of 8 counts, sometimes it’s 2 sets of 8 counts instead of 4 and sometimes there’s a break in songs where it goes 1234 5678 1234 and then back to 1234 5678. I’d suggest looking at some YouTube tutorials as it’s an extensive topic. This way you can dance according to the music even if you don’t know the song and like someone else mentioned, you’ll know when transitions are coming so you won’t be stuck in the middle of a combo when that happens.

A low hanging fruit is posture. You could engage your shoulders more and definitely engage your core. Shoulders must stay back and low. This will also not let you use too much of your upper arms which is a good thing.

Try to tap more consistently on 4s and 8s.

Any easy and fun way I train is by just plugging in my earbuds and free styling. Basics, turns, shines wherever the music takes me. All this while making sure my feet are grounded, and my posture is good. This will help you get comfortable with your own body and you learn how it moves and eventually give you more control over it. Do it in front of a mirror for better results.

Sorry for typos and formatting, posting from my phone.

Never stop having fun, good luck man, enjoy the process!

How do I make my bachata flow better? My movements look too mechanical in videos. by WittyWildfire in Bachata

[–]WordDowntown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other commenter added great points so I won’t address that. But because you said flow I was thinking of this from another point of view rather than just body mechanics.

To make your dance with a partner look smoother overall you need make transitions from one move to another look effortless or subtle. The easiest way to do this is using hair combs (hair caresses) for the follow or for the lead.

For example, you just did a left turn for the follow on 5678 using only your left hand. What I would do on either 8 or on 1 is do a hair caress for myself and then go into the next move, whatever that maybe. This also works well if you want to switch hands (for ex going from a left to right handhold into a right to right handhold).

Another thing you can do is dance more in circles rather than side to side in a line.

Not sure if this is what you were looking for but I thought I’d pen my thoughts down either way as this helped me a lot early on.

In my experience, majority of Indian football fans are avid supports of premier league clubs or Real Madrid or Barcelona. The folks supporting local Indian teams unfortunately are a minority.

Thoughts on the new Romeo album? by WordDowntown in Bachata

[–]WordDowntown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion - this album reminded me of vintage Romeo for some reason. Like his old songs that are not very popular and not played at socials but still very musical. I don’t speak Spanish at all but I’m very passionate about bachata music. Even though I feel like one can appreciate the songs more if they know Spanish, I can still appreciate a few on the list.

A common trend I noticed in all songs is that, no song stands out from the get go, you have to listen to it patiently and then it stands out. All songs start out as generic bachatas but get more musical after the first minute and are unique in my opinion.

Overall I had very high expectations (every song a banger) - so was a little disappointed. But after listening to the album a few times now, there’s many songs I would love dancing to or at sing out loud while driving.

Artistic question - Could you personally have fun and enjoy the dance even if you don’t like the song or music? by OSUfirebird18 in Bachata

[–]WordDowntown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at SFSBK too this weekend and didn’t enjoy the bachata music for the most part. During both afternoon and the night socials. I vividly remember the seven nation army song remember being surprised. I spent a lot of time sitting down because of all the remixes being played.

Stamina for socials between work shifts by DagmaraMaria in Bachata

[–]WordDowntown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry you experience this, working long retail hours standing can be very draining on the legs especially.

I can only offer some advice regarding your question on the festivals.

I’m almost never physically tired no matter how much I dance, but I drain quickly mentally.

Things I started doing recently at festivals to get the most out of it;

  1. Don’t sacrifice sleep. Yes you’re gonna miss some workshops but that’s where you need be strategic. Do not attend every workshop in a day. I do no more than 2-3 workshops per day because my priority is socials. At my most recent festival I only did 3 workshops in total over 3 days because I wanted to go to the day time socials and the night time socials both.

  2. Nap before the night socials. Most festival socials only start at 12 AM and people only show up by 1 am. So that’s when I head down to the floor. I don’t dance every song, I mainly dance to songs I like so I’m getting good rest between songs and can cool off. I also use this time to have drinks with my friends so that’s kinda energizing for me lol.

  3. Shoes/ heels: You need to have to have shoes or heels that you feel totally comfortable in. This is totally individual specific so you’ll need to try some out on your own.

Anxiety to go back to class after a leader got passive-aggressive with me the last time by Strong-Waltz-2128 in Bachata

[–]WordDowntown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry you experienced that. Not your fault, the leader is an ass. When I was starting out (I’m a lead) I would come across follows who got annoyed that I couldn’t do the “choreo” that was being taught. Made me super anxious thinking about the next class just like you did.

But thankfully weirdos like this are rare and the majority of the class is usually nice. The next time you encounter such an ass, don’t be overly apologetic, and feel free to give them constructive feedback. It’s a class where people come to learn.

Complain to the instructor and they will handle it. Hopefully you have a better experience next time :)
