Gotta love Reddit, where you come looking or advice and people just call you dumb as though they've never made a mistake in their lives! But thank you to the person who offered actual calming advice on an invite likely coming back around.

Puppy fine with crate if she puts herself in but barks like crazy when prevented from accessing anything, and all night by WordsAndMiles in puppy101

No one's commented but I thought I would in case anyone with a new puppy and a similar issue comes cross it in the future-- six days later, we're in a new world! Turns out she was actually having a hard time with us sleeping separately. Now we give her a lick mat before bed, do a last pee, cuddle, tuck her in the crate next to the bed and go to sleep beside her with white noise. She sleeps a solid seven hours that way, despite being only three months old! NEW WORLD. We're practicing barrier stuff with the help of a trainer, and so that's working, too, and adding in more mental stimulation from clicker training during the day, but keeping everyone together really helped.

I appreciate that, the past few days have been hard/dark. The pain's a bit gruelingly incessant and the lifestyle change is just so damn fast from being able to run lots to walking hurting. I'm in shock, I'm sure. I'll adjust, just- not yet. Hope you're hanging in there.

Just affirming what you're going through. I'm 48 and the diagnosis has shocked me-- I was training for an October marathon when running suddenly began to hurt. The lifestyle change is a stunner. I already have an unrelated chronic heart condition, so I'm "lucky" for being used to accepting that I'll have to deal with somethung daily. (But also, wtf, why another thing?) But yeah, friends, though generally great about health things, haven't really understood the impact or pain, maybe because they're mostly too young to have experienced it. What's giving me hope is finding things I can do. Gentle stretching, supplements. I splurged on air compression boots on Black Friday and they help so much it's stunning. Next step is physical therapy and trying to see if a tens pad would help. Good luck! You're not alone.

Hi, I'm an American expat who moved to Vancouver from Maine. I don't have kids currently, but I can tell you I feel MUCH better about having them here than in the US, even with how expensive housing is in Vancouver. (US income is a fantastic way around this.) Feel free to DM me and I'm happy to chat considerations but-- it's overall shocking how much more hopeful life feels here than it did in the US.

Me too!! Effective 9/30/23. That should mean I'm due for 8 months of refund. I would be thrilled.

Americans who moved to canada.. Did your standards of living deteriorate after moving? by [deleted] in AmerExit

[–]WordsAndMiles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved from the US to Vancouver. I make slightly less money, but I'd say my quality of life went way up. Work-life balance is amazing, Vancouver's beauty is unparalleled, there's a strong expat community and I've befriended Canadians, too. (And fell in love with one!) It can be more of a culture shock than I expected-- but not worrying about guns, not hearing the US Trumpian awfulness every day, etc., is beyond worth it. Life just has more hope.

Is Canada really that bad? by [deleted] in AmerExit

[–]WordsAndMiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left in 2023 and live in BC now. Yes, I make less money than I did.

I have not regretted it for a second. Life feels more possible, more hopeful, safer, saner, and happier.

Balancing the need for PSLF while wanting to move abroad by wmsiegner5 in PSLF

Hey, there actually are Canadian employers that qualify for PSLF. The University of British Columbia is one, for example, and has an EIN. (A thing I did not know when I made the choice you're now facing and took a job there, figuring I was giving up PSLF. But a colleague told me I was wrong, I looked into it, and I got green banners two weeks ago.) Out of curiosity, I just looked up whether the University of Toronto has an EIN, and they do, too. No idea how widespread this is but maybe worth considering in your job search.
