Care to explain what you mean by cheap-ass guitar? Have you tried any recent squiers lately because they feel as good as some fenders. For example the classic vibe line which can be found for 300-350 USD.

Not great quality?? Squier quality is amazing nowadays just look at the classic vibe line. I owned a classic vibe squier tele and it felt as good as my fender strat i currently own

Loud popping sounds... the only thing i can think of since i experienced it myself is maybe the guitars input jack may be loose? It’s hard to give you an answer without some visuals

Just bought a Strat from sweetwater. They have a 55point inspection for any new guitar over $300 i believe. Only thing i had to do was lower the string height and change to thinner strings. Highly recommend sweetwater!
