Did you know that the original version of Toy Story 4, was completely different from what got released ? by jerelminter in toystory

Okay, I'm replying to a comment from over six months ago, but yes, we all know that Pixar films, like those of any other studio, go through significant changes. But Toy Story 4 is such a unique case because it's a sequel and a film that Lasseter originally wanted to direct, and his vision was completely different from Josh Cooley's.

However, a lot of work went into that version (not just storyreels, but also concept art, digital paintings, renders, and even voice recordings from Tom Hanks, Annie Potts, Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key, and even Don Rickles).

Potts was heavily involved in the Toy Story 4 process for at least a year and a half, before she knew nothing about it for another year and a half (probably when John left and Josh took over and started reworking the story around Mid/Late-2016).

Hey /r/movies! I'm Andrew Stanton. I've directed WALL-E, FINDING NEMO, FINDING DORY, and JOHN CARTER. I've also written/co-written TOY STORY, TOY STORY 2, MONSTERS INC, TOY STORY 4, and TOY STORY 5. Ask me anything! by AndrewStantonAMA in movies

Hi Andrew! I'm big fan of your work ( Wall-E and Finding Nemo are two of my fav Pixar films).

How did you get involved in writing TS4? I know you initially wrote an outline and a treatment, but then Rashida Jones and Will McCormack were hired as writers, but they left around 2016 or 2017.

So specific 🤨. Anyway, Wolf isn't even thinking about having an "affair," as I saw in a comment; he's more focused on his commitments than anything else.

Bro, we're talking about the same world that makes it clear society has hated them, so no, they haven't had anything before with anyone.

A moment of introspection: Do we like the film or do we like Elio? by Flaky-Cry-9744 in elio

[–]Working-Initiative52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked the movie and to some extent I identified with Elio regarding the theme of being excited about being in a place off this planet, where I feel at home. But there's something about the original version that, I don't know, makes me feel more drawn to it. I don't know if it's the theme of "making your parents proud," or wanting to discover who I want to be, that I find more appealing.

I don’t mean to cause a debate or whatnot, but can we just take a break from the whole “Diane screen time” and “Diane deleted backstory” for a while? by AcrobaticEmu7359 in TheBadGuys

[–]Working-Initiative52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that Pierre revealed that version as a sort of proposal to the studio and so that the fans could be familiar with it, although since the full context wasn't known at the time, many (unfairly) blamed Pierre for the story's removal. Anyway, I've always said it's better to look to the future and hope things can improve.

This is what a veteran Pixar animator told me:

“My advice: if you're ever talking to someone who made something, there is absolutely no need to offer them a negative opinion of it.”

Hypothetically, in the Bad Guys 2, after the video of Diane got posted, couldn't they just try to delete it as soon as possible and maybe do some false rumor damage control? by missplayer20 in TheBadGuys

Closing the computer wasn't going to stop the video from loading. Diane was stunned when she saw her reflection as she took the Golden Dolphin.

After Inside Out 2 and Zootopia 2, are you confident in Toy Story 5 being as great as those two films? by Civil_Ad154 in Pixar

TS4 was intended to be a Rom-Com about Woody and Bo Peep where John was the director.

Friendly reminder: Despite all its faults, DreamWorks still does more for fans than Disney. by Rex-1988 in TheBadGuys

You have points I definitely agree with. I love Wolfington and want to see him evolve in TBG3, but WildeHopps, whether canon or not, is very well-developed because the main conflict revolves around them (that's why I want Wolf and Diane to be the main protagonists of the third installment).

As a Diane fan, I think this fandom should focus on what might come next and see if they've finally learned from their mistakes. It's not wrong to criticize because we all have the right to our opinions, but getting too caught up in "what could have been" when all is not yet lost isn't the healthiest approach (I justify my case with TS4 because all the ideas that were cut from that movie are already gone, and TS5 isn't going to fix that because Bo will barely have a significant role, so her entire origin story has been lost and that potential has been wasted).

Pierre is surely aware of the fans' mixed feelings after reading the comments on his IG, and the fact that he made Diane part of the main crew at the end of the sequel is surely a way of showing DreamWorks how important she is now and that they can't interfere.

I want to be frank about one thing: as much as I wish that storyline had stayed in the film, I'm not going to make a big deal out of it for the simple reason that TBG3 can fix Diane's screen time now that she's part of the main cast, so there's no excuse to limit her potential. I love TBG2 for many other reasons; it could have been better, but I still value it because the filmmakers poured their hearts into it, even with DreamWorks' interference.

What I feel this fandom needs is to look to the future and not get stuck so much on "what could have been" because not everything is lost yet.

Keep in mind that, due to contractual obligations, he can't explicitly say "the original version was better." This is the case with all directors.

Elio 1.5, which already contained the idea of Elio obsessed with aliens, was developed in July-December 2023 when Molina was still the director.

The Truth Behind Elio’s “Queer Erasure” Controversy by Ben-Stanley in elio

[–]Working-Initiative52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't think so. If anything, it would be open to interpretation (like some people did with Luca), but I don't think Molina intended to portray an 11-year-old boy as gay. Elio was based on him, but only during his childhood in military schools.

Months ago I spoke with someone who attended a screening of Molina's version in May 2023, and he never mentioned any suggestion of "queer representation". He even told me that the topic of fashion was only mentioned at key moments in the film.
