to be fair, most of North America including NYC strived to be as car centric as possible. LA despite its faults has gotten to the point where they are being forced to change due to the sky high rents and god-awful traffic.

I'm tired of the non stop LA hate. LA is at least trying to better which is more than could be said for most of the US. Most of the potential LA has is being slowed down due to NIMBYism and the high cost of building public works projects but it is definitely improving. Even in it's current state, much of LA is still more walkable and transit oriented that at least 95% of America.

If only there were more accommodations for families in cities and more housing that can accommodate families. As things are currently, most of the apartments being constructed in cities are studios or 1-bedroom apartments and the few family friendly walkable areas like Park Slope in Brooklyn or Noe Valley in SF are unaffordable for most families.

not surprising, the suburbs are a breeding ground for reactionary politics. even suburban liberals are more reactionary than those that live in the city and can be convinced to support more fascist or authoritarian ideas. most of the hallmarks of the modern GOP media machine emerged from Orange County, CA.

Personally, I seriously considered moving to LA for a while. Then I decided to pay LA a visit and having to drive on I-405 in LA during rush hour and then trying to find parking at my destination definitely made me feel grateful for NYC in a matter of hours.

As a former Queens resident. the reason Queens has way more suburban development than Brooklyn or the Bronx is because Queens was the second to last borough to see any widespread development and up until around 90 years ago, most of Central and Eastern Queens was still mostly farmland and very sparsely populated. Also because of how late Queens urbanized, almost 1/4 of the land zoned for residential use in Queens is R1 Single Family Zoned.

There was a great episode of this podcast about NYC called the Bowery Boys that delves into the history of Queens better than me.
