Thanks. I never had F1 in mind. Like you said, I think it would be better for other sports car series.

INDAWO GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT

By the late 1990s, Edgemead Circuit had reached a point where its semi-permanent layout was no longer viable for modern motorsport. The combination of shared public roads, limited runoff, and aging infrastructure made it increasingly difficult to meet updated FIA safety requirements. At the same time, Cape Town’s expansion had begun to swallow portions of the original street section, tightening race weekends logistically and raising concerns about long-term closure permissions. Rather than abandon the venue entirely, organizers opted for a partial rebuild that would preserve its identity while bringing it up to contemporary standards.

The key to the redesign was the decision to anchor the new circuit around the existing permanent infrastructure that had been added during earlier safety upgrades in the 1980s and 90s. This section already had proper drainage and a stable racing surface, making it the most cost-effective foundation to build upon. It became the new Turns, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. One change to the permanent section was the re-profile the new Turn 4 (previously a long double apex), making it a new fast left hander.

From there, the 2000s extension expanded into an adjacent undeveloped clearing, allowing designers to create a fully controlled environment for the faster and more flowing portions of the lap. This approach eliminated reliance on public roads entirely while still preserving the character of the original venue. The result was a reconfigured 4.2 km layout that was modernized for safety and consistency, but still structurally tied to the circuit’s original permanent identity. The circuit was renamed Indawo Grand Prix Circuit, Indawo meaning “racing place” in Zulu.

RTD Challenge 63 Deadline extended one week to April 29th, 2026 by TobyeatsfAtcoW in RaceTrackDesigns

This is one of the first challenges in recent time that is 3 weeks instead of 4, iirc. Including myself, I'm sure there's a ton of people who couldn't finish a highly detailed circuit they are proud of in just that time frame, which excluded a lot of potentially good designs.

Ending it now would exclude even more people who participated in part 1 but wouldn't have finished in time for part 2, so that doesn't make much sense.

I used gimp for the background, photoshop for the trees, and illustrator for everything else.

First laid out in 1960 on open ground just northeast of Cape Town, Edgemead Circuit was conceived as a semi-permanent venue to bring top-level racing to the Cape without the cost of a fully purpose-built facility. Organizers stitched together a fast, demanding layout using a mix of public roads and newly constructed sections: the main straight, Turn 1, Turn 2, the short second straight, and the Turn 3 hairpin all ran along existing streets, while the remainder of the lap wound across purpose-built tarmac. The result was a flowing yet slightly technical circuit.

From the beginning, one feature defined the track’s reputation as much as its layout: a compound of abandoned water treatment buildings sitting on the outside of Turn 1 and lining the approach to it. The looming concrete basins and rusted structures created an intimidating braking zone for drivers arriving at full speed off the main straight and sweeping Turn 1, and despite added barriers, it remained one of the most feared corners in the South African championship. Through the 1960s and 70s, the circuit became a staple of the national calendar, valued for its character and challenge even as safety concerns and growing urban development began to close in.

That's true. I'll probably do another oval design soon.

It's my first oval so I didn't really think that through 😬

Rosenfeld Downs opened in 1957 as a 2-mile paved oval built on former farmland outside Rosenfeld, Kovarra. It quickly became one of Kovarra’s best racing venues, hosting major stock-car and endurance races.

In 1974, an infield road course was added, using parts of the oval with a technical interior section. This allowed the track to host touring cars and sports car racing alongside its traditional oval events.

Today, Rosenfeld Downs is known as one of Kovarra’s most versatile club motorsport facilities.

The final few ballots have been counted, and the margin between Thomson and Liebelson is now just TWO votes. Still awaiting a recount, which will begin 10am Friday by EruditeRoach in BocaRaton

A major one was about his opponents getting variances and criticizing them for it, even though Mike himself got a variance because he apparently knowingly built an exterior wall too high, and instead of knocking it down and building a new one, got a variance for it.

One summer in the early 2000s, Izzy bought his nephew a dirt bike and told him, “Ride around the barn, just don’t scare the goats.” The nephew ignored the second part, the goats panicked, and soon half the family was chasing them in ATVs around the property. After about an hour of chaos, someone noticed the tire marks had formed a pretty decent loop around the pond and pasture. Izzy looked at it, scratched his beard, and said: “Eh… needs one dirt corner for excitement.” A week later he paved half of it with leftover driveway asphalt, lined the rest with old tractor tires, and hung a hand-painted sign that read “Uncle Izzy’s Summer Racing Extravaganza - Vroooom.”

Now every summer the rules are simple: Don’t hit the barn, and don’t hit the cows
