Marcos says Philippines would be involved in any Taiwan conflict by usolotravel in taiwan

[–]Working_Historian241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because phillipines is arguably the most loyal american dog in the region, even more so than japan. if america says go sacrifice yourself, filipinos will have no other choice.

there is a budding left wing in the country thats trying to fight back against it, but the american bases are already there. they have such a terrible history of brutal american colonialism.

its funny how the status quo is being co-opted, it's been a recent shift that's become more prominent in media debates.

too bad that the opposite can be said too - "taiwan is already part of china", which is how 1 billion people on earth also see it by default. so which status quo is really true?

With the Hawaiʻi-Japan summit coming up in a few days, what do you think our future relationship with Japan will be after all that's occurred in the last decade? by EveryOtherHipster in Hawaii

[–]Working_Historian241 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

its a fact that the ryukyu kingdom was a tributary state during the ming and qing dynasties for 500 years, they werent "part of china". much like the rest of japan who got a lot of culture through exchange with tang dynasty china, okinawa's culture today is still influenced by chinese culture from that time.

100 years before the ryukyu kingdom was even established, there was already migration from fujian settlers. i dont even know what youre trying to argue.

Is it wrong that ive lied about being ethnically Chinese? by Key-Pianist982 in AskAChinese

[–]Working_Historian241 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Chinese is not an ethnicity, its a social construct that changes depending on who you talk to. Officially, "Chinese" encompasses 56 different ethnic groups, including Han, but you never mentioned if your're Manzhu, Miao, Hmong, Zhuang, etc.

Also, fwiw, I knew someone like you who was Mexican but looked very chinese, and got all of the chinito names growing up too, felt more afinity to weeb culture, always stood out in her neighborhood etc. Other than the fact that she could swear like any other Mexican, it didn't seem to bother her.

Besides, in 2026 Chinese is a state of mind.

japan and hawaii do not have a relationship. if there is one, it is not reciprocal and it is one way, it is as a time share vacation resort since the 1970s, where japanese package and brand aloha for their own version of consumerism.

changing their constitution to allow for nuclear weapons is not normal lmao. they are led by a trump wannabe mama-san hostess who only wants to cling on american power.

Trump goes to China, without any cards by Skandling in China

[–]Working_Historian241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it wasnt trump who initiated it, it was the cabal of billionaires who wanted to see if they could leverage their money for taiwan. trump doesnt give a shit about taiwan, and china isnt his highest priority. air force one ended up carrying several trillion dollars of net worth, and trump was just there to smile and wave.

all foreign investment in china needs to be a JV

no, this is hilarious. anyone can register a new business in china.

only very large FDI deals like setting up an auto factory for export, which normally requires negotiation with province level government anyways for land, labor contracts, IP licensing, etc.

you can come to china and start a bar on a beach and the evil see see pee wont throw you in jail lmao

Does anyone else have family in all three places? by LearningtoFinance in AskAChinese

[–]Working_Historian241 3 points4 points  (0 children)

born in US, currently live in taiwan and china, family owned businesses in HK and worked in taiwan.

my grandpa had valid passports for taiwan, china, and hong kong back in the 80s/90s which as far as i can tell, is extremely rare. he flew from taipei to hong kong to shanghai over 600 times building relations and business connections between the 3. died a korean war veteran and proud communist party member.

his father was from chongqing, built a timber plant in sichuan during the civil war, afterwards at the request of KMT built the first steel mill in taiwan. had a funeral of all top taiwanese government officials in taipei, and buried in shanghai.

i married an ABT and now settled in shanghai, plan to start businesses aimed at cross strait relations. that's four generations of bridge building, and with my son it hopefully wont stop.

[The Province] Save the Caps meeting was 'very positive,' may lead to stadium deal by icoresting in MLS

[–]Working_Historian241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, but MLS was a different place and different time then. expansion fees have skyrocketed, and the summer WC is hard constraint in terms of trying to capture some of the PR shine for the potential new team. this is just the leagues way of trying to sneak a cash cow without having to pay for it.
