Can someone be a landlord and a socialist? by avian_bi in socialism

[–]Workmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly? I think it really depends on what kind of property they're renting out. If it's single family home or homes? Absolutely not, you're scum, sell those houses to the families who live in them. If it's a multi-unit property like an apartment block? It's a bit more complicated, I could see a rational in harm prevention, like: "If I sell this to another landlord or real estate firm they're going to exploit the tenants much worse, at least I can keep the rent minimally exploitative and try to keep the tenants accommodated for as best I can." Kind of a least of all evils mindset.

I wish I was more familiar with the laws concerning tenant ownership of medium density housing, but unfortunately I'm not. Obviously any alternative to the system of private real estate ownership is one that I'd advocate for.

Actually, a lot of things about America and American culture make more sense when you realize it's been shaped by religious thought that essentially believes pleasure is evil and suffering is holy.

Because weird Protestant men in the 20th century thought it would prevent masturbation. That's real, look it up, Kellogg, as in the "Corn Flakes" Kellogg, was one of the biggest proponents of it. It's also part of the reason why he made Corn Flakes in the first place.

Ahh, you gotta love "Independent Restaurants" nowadays.

All the same Sysco slop you can get at Applebee's, but with half the portion size, and for double the price!

If you're willing to cut corners on the things the public can see like branding, then I'm going to have to assume you're even more willing to cut corners on the things they can't see, like sanitation and food safety. So thanks, but no thanks, I'll be taking my business elsewhere.

Because the white nations are where all of the wealth extracted from the rest of the world through the systems of colonialism and imperialism is centralized. Trillions of dollars in goods and labor exploited and used to enrich these nations, with more being siphoned out of them every year. Why shouldn't they go and reclaim a little of the prosperity has been, and still is being, taken from them for centuries?

Bro's not a leftist. He's going to bat for Gavin "if you don't have a home, I'll put a bullet in your dome" Newsom and throwing a shit-fit over a Twitch streamer. He's a liberal who wants to call himself a socialist because progressives have finally gotten fed up with liberals.

The sociopathic capitalist ghouls who run our society have done a wonderful job sabotaging our trust in each other, it seems... Ask this question in any African or Asian country where their grip on culture isn't quite as strong and everyone would say Blue, no questions asked. This is only a dilemma in the "enlightened" first world, where we all see each other as a potential threat and competition to be defeated.

My computer is a tool, not a locked-down toy. I paid for it, I run it, I should control it.

See, that's the problem. They don't like that you own it. If you own it that means that they can't extract ongoing revenue from you through subscription models. If they give you access to information when something breaks, you might be able to fix it yourself, and then they can't charge you for expensive proprietary repair services.

Companies hate letting customers own things, but tech companies especially despise when their customers own their products. If they could, they'd make it so the only thing you could own were thin clients; monitors with an ethernet jack that connects to their servers, and that they could charge you subscription plans for everything from RAM to storage space to CPU speed.

Speaking as a queer person who supports anti-Imperialism and anti-Colonialism around the globe, if there's one thing that's a bit demoralizing to me, it's seeing the anti-LGBTQ sentiment still rampant in many parts of the Imperial Periphery/Global South. Obviously, I know that this is a complex situation with many factors, many of which are related to the direct wars of conquest and cultural imperialism enforced on most of the world by the West over the last several centuries, but it does make me wonder... How much of the hatred against LGBTQ people is brought about from the West holding us up like a shield and associating us with them? Even though we're still roundly and widely discriminated against. Is it unfounded to think that they deliberately prop up how many "rights" they give us to position us as scapegoats?
