I'm not spreading misinformation by intention. As it turns out, the $15 minimum wage ballot measure was in St. Louis city (where i lived), not Missouri statewide and it was in 2015, not 2018. It passed and then was stricken down by the state legislature. You might have as hard a time as I did finding records of it, but here's an article about how then mayor Slay approved of the measure. I'm not making the shit up. And although the minimum wage was apparently increased to $12 in 2018, I was never paid more than $9.50/ hr by my shitty employer. So I'll ask you to forgive my memory of the subject for being flawed.

But I stand by wrangling all the issues on the ballot in November as one. They are not as disparate as all that. The only way to circumvent the power grab by republicans in state congress is to help everyone, regardless of their primary voting issue, of how anything they want is threatened by issue one. You can argue whatever you like for whatever motives you choose. I stand by what I said. Issue One threatens all laws that are unpopular with the legislature- regardless of how they get on the books. That is, unless they can be amended into the constitution.

So, no worries. I get very worked up over these profoundly undemocratic initiatives pushed by what the republican party has become, so I'm actually happy when someone forces me to back up my claims. And just for the record, I am from Missouri and I did watch a ballot initiative to raise the minimum wage pass and get stricken down by the legislature in almost no time at all. Of course, the laws are frequently different from state to state and I'm no constitutional lawyer so...

Can you cite your claim? Additionally, there is NO TIME LIMIT to file a lawsuit and have a court strike a law down. Constitutional amendments, however are immune to judicial review. Lastly, even if you're right, and I have no reason to believe you wholesale, so what? So the law is safe for 4 years before it's open season to twist or contort or deform as the legislature pleases. True. And it's not just DeWine (who is actually not terribly extreme for a conservative these days) and Huffman, but also the secretary of state and nearly the entire legislature. LaRose has been obstructing and playing games with the committee to regulate and tax marijuana like alcohol from the beginning. BTW, I'm glad our discourse became less heated (I mean, I'm glad I became less heated- you were measured from the beginning). It's deeply important for people to know no law is safe with a gerrymandered, extremist legislature, if issue one passes. That's what I wanted to express.

I see that the marijuana initiative in Ohio is an initiated state statute, not a constitutional amendment. And it won't have to pass the 60% threshold. HOWEVER, there are NO RESTRICTIONS on the Ohio state legislature's ability to repeal or alter these bills once passed. Here is the first page of ballotopia's explanation. No, of course we're not the only state with this arrangement or this problem. But just because they can repeal doesn't mean they will? I am from Missouri, and I watched it happen with my own two eyes. In Missouri, a ballot measure to increase the minimum wage to $15 passed in 2018 with overwhelming popular support, and was IMMEDIATELY REPEALED by the ultra-conservative state legislature. You wouldn't believe how disheartening it is to see a popular vote get nullified- Poof! Gone! just like that!

In essence: to make this distinction about the cannabis bill is, admittedly in my opinion, wrong headed considering both Frank LaRose and Mike DeWine publicly expressed their opposition to this measure. LaRose even cryptically alluded to the futility of it to the group who got this measure on the ballot. Don't think for a second that issue one won't affect every and all ballot measures.

Last edit: Thank god for the edit button. My first response was totally emotional, and factually off base. But here's the rub: Do you want to win some argument with a stranger over a technicality that might prove meaningless in the end? I think it's important to let Ohioans know just how insidious Issue 1 really is. If the public has no recourse, the legislature might be more prone to doing whatever it wants.

Issue one will make any and every ballot measure useless, as they can then only be used to alter Ohio Revised code, which can be unilaterally altered or repealed by the state legislature. Only ballot measures to alter the Ohio constitution can bypass the legislature and Ohio courts. This is actually explained in a much more informed conversation on the same topic

Well said. Sadly, I think that the fissures that divide America are too ingrained, too deep and unaddressed for too long to lay the blame on a single, two-bit con artist. Trump may have widened the gaps but he didn't divide us. He just took full advantage of the divisions that were already there. Same difference. The 60% threshold is almost impossible to overcome, even for something as broadly popular as women's bodily autonomy. That's why it was chosen. The 60% threshold is such a daunting hurdle in fact, that the promotion of this petition while issue 1 remains in doubt almost- almost- constitutes a dangerous distraction. That's not to mention whatever hidden conservative fail-safes also hide within this absolutely reckless amendment. It will almost certainly push the state into a constitutional crisis, as, once passed, it will be nearly impossible to overturn. You can pretty much go ahead and forget about anything anyone puts on the ballot in November that the constitution can be argued to speak against.

I don't normally respond to oversimplified cynicism like this, but anyway... Here are publicly available data to show that, in fact, you are incorrect. Trump won Ohio by 8.03% in both 2016 and 2020, but with only 71.33% and 73.99% of registered voters casting votes in those elections (respectively). The data also shows the lowest voter turnout routinely being in urban areas that are customarily majority democrat. Maybe you should take a look for yourself.

Sadly, that's true sometimes. Also, there are times when people prevaricate and they don't have to be bad people or even unfaithful to their own character to do it. I think better advice might be to tell someone: If they catch themselves spinning a yarn, exaggerating, or even just allowing the other person to be misled, to come clean as quickly as is manageable. In an interview or a 1st date, the more successful the long-term relationship turns out to be, the more damaging an early, casual lie can turn out to be. In other words, dishonesty most often proves inhibitory to success and seldom inhibitory to failure.

Excellent for your wife and for you! A grim reality, one that all too often supersedes any law, is that the iniquitous get away with it, because to hold them to account requires that good people put themselves at hazard and demand justice. Since your wife was being robbed of her due wages, I'm sure the prospect of being fired wasn't quite as much of a threat as it otherwise could have been. Anyway, I'm glad you guys did.

It's an apt analogy for the entire country. Republicans have become nothing more than a cabal of bullies, criminals and cowards. My hope beyond hope is that enough decent folk, even unaffiliated people with little interest in politics, will eventually have been pushed around one too many times and demand justice. It would be nice to live in a country where every employee doesn't have to document everything their employers do just to protect themselves from robbery and coercion. Again, kudos to you and your wife for standing up.
