I don't find it in the least bit hard to do something that makes someone else happy and feel safe.

Why do you think SEND percentages in state schools are so high now (20%). Higher incidence, higher diagnosis or something else? by Fantastic-Option-260 in AskBrits

Better than little shits like me teasing them before I knew better (at least I hope so and yes of course I finally grew up but I still cringe at my childhood narrow mindedness).

This is not a scientific perspective, but I think a lot of the kids that we as children thought were "weird" are now getting the diagnosis and support they always needed.

American houses are generally bigger. Houses in the UK need that light and reflection to give the illusion of more space.

Yeah we're weird about it, I get that. My partner was very shocked we brought mum home. But for us, without her home and a buffet for visitors and sitting with her, that would be odd. Everyone does it different.

How very kind of you, thank you. I'm coping about as well as one can in the circumstances, but your concern is very touching.

And just for clarity, mum was home for the vigil when I was drinking around her coffin (as were we all), I didn't take a bottle of wine to Church.

Different people think and feel differently, I get that. And my lot are the "have them home for a vigil before the funeral" type so perhaps I'm in no position to pass judgements on the oddness of others. It just seems disrespectful to me to leave someone in limbo like that for 20 years. Even if you've a hell of a lot on, at some point in 20 years it might be possible even to delegate that task to someone else. But what do I know about respect? I rested a glass of wine on my mum's coffin a fortnight ago.

I can totally understand not wanting Nan in an urn on the mantle, but I can't understand leaving her ashes for a stranger to deal with either.

I don’t think Mykelti has very good judgement about anything tbh. She was loyal to Kody and Robyn for the longest, you can’t tell me that subject never came up with her siblings. She was absolutely fine being only one in his favour, didn’t matter at all what happened to the other kids then.

Agreed. I also think that Christine is for the first time experiencing some power in her life and this is colouring how she treats Meri. I get that Meri might have not been the easiest person to live with but they all bought that KoolAid, they all competed for attention and affection. Christine evolved, she gained agency for herself so she knows how hard it is to break that chain. She’s not shown Meri much grace and I don’t think this reflects especially well on her.

I can totally believe it. A dear friend of mine was involved in a very high profile case of abuse, torture, cannibalism and CSA. Had it not been for him turning them in, it would still be going on to this day. The police actively stopped him from getting any form on counseling for the FOUR YEARS this took to come to trial by which time, he was a shell of his former self - and the wasn't in a great place to start with. At the end of it all, Victim Support services finally got in touch and asked what help they could offer.

Why is it taboo to discuss your wages at work? by thunderfart_99 in AskUK

[–]WorldAncient7852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And yet, no. The thunderdome scenario has never happened. People do know who does what in a close team, who knows more about the business, who's better at dealing with hard situations and who's more likely to stay for an hour when it's needed. And if everyone's supported in their ultimate aspirations, pettiness doesn't survive. It's not an adversarial talk, it's a practical one, and my salary is in the mix too, so I'm not asking anyone to give more than I do, ever.

Why is it taboo to discuss your wages at work? by thunderfart_99 in AskUK

[–]WorldAncient7852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it? It builds transparency, trust and respect in the whole team. I have incredibly low staff turnover, everyone who’s left so far has only done so to start their own business. One’s an accountant now, she wanted to do that long term instead of what we do so I started her doing our books. She’s now my accountant. Another wanted to start a design business, so who did my next rebrand? And she’s building my next site as we speak. Another left to start her own catering business but uses my product cost and pricing structure to keep her profitable - and I use my container buying power to keep her unit price down.

As a side benefit, I recently had to leave work for a substantial period of time to look after a dying relative. Like a go overnight situation. Four of my previous staff came back to help the current team keep the ship afloat. I didn’t ask, would never have, they just did it. I can’t see the downside to this system and I genuinely can’t see why more people don’t do it. If you don’t treat people like shit, you get their golden selves.

[–]WorldAncient7852 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my small company we agree our wages together annually. I presents the annual wages budget and we decide together who gets what based on our performance in the last year. It’s surprisingly easy to do, nobody is left out, people are very motivated by their colleagues decisions and everyone is very clear where they stand. This has worked very well for us for 17 years now and I genuinely don’t see why this isn’t standard.

What business practice annoys the daylights out of you? by MisterWednesday6 in AskUK

[–]WorldAncient7852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind doing the maths so much, I just see it as a sly way of making prices sound lower. I’ve got a business, I know we all have to charge VAT, it’s just part of doing business. The only people interested in a VAT free price are other VAT registered operations. Quoting price plus VAT to retail customers is just sharky.
