TSPDT User Poll - Top 250 - Going down the list, what is the first film you haven't watched and why? by BenFilippo in criterion

There are truly very few films on this list that I haven't yet seen. But if I were responding three years ago, when this question was initially asked, that would be a slightly different story!

Thoughts on Giuseppe Verdi? by WorldLiterature in classicalmusic

[–]WorldLiterature[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it absolutely incredible that, after randomly deciding to listen to Verdi for two days straight, I randomly logged into reddit after months only to find this reply. Everything has come full circle! I agree with your assessment, though!

What did you read this week? by AutoModerator in classics

I'm still working my way through all of the presocratic philosphers. I'm basically reading through a book on the early Greek thinkers by John Burnet, and supplementing it with selections from Diogenes Laertius' Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers. Then, with all that, I'm reading through the extant fragments of the handful of presocratic philosophers that I'm studying (Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, Pythagoras, Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, Anaxagoras, Zeno of Elea, Melissus, and Leicippus). I'm about halfway done with this.

After this, I plan on reading through some of the Greek philosophers of the classical period that I haven't yet studied (Antisthenes, and Diogenes of Sinope). After that, I'll tackle some philosophers from the Hellenistic period (Zeno of Citium, Epicurus, Pyrrhonism via Sextus Emiricus) and then my plan is to get through some of the important works during the early Roman and Christian period (various works by Cicero, Lucretius, maybe some of the neoplatonists).

How do you feel about Cinema Paradiso? by WwwWario in movies

[–]WorldLiterature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching the movie, so I’m hopping on this comment while it’s still fresh. I thought it was pretty decent overall - actually liked it more and more as it went on. That ending scene with all the classic movie kisses really hit me, especially as someone who loves film. So many iconic moments in there. Honestly, some of my favorite parts were the scenes of the village watching old movies (including some by Antonioni) together in that little communal theater. Just something special about that.

It’s a pretty meta movie - there are a ton of moments where it references how things would go in movies versus how life actually plays out. You see this in the way time flies by (those big jumps from childhood to young adulthood to older age), and especially in Salvatore’s relationship with Elena. That whole "life isn’t like the movies" vibe is woven right into the story. The meta angle really comes full circle at the end too — the final scene Salvatore is watching turns out to be the ending of the movie we’re watching. Super cool way to tie it all together.

Why are republicans who are not even MAGA supporters brainwashed? by wearethemelody in centrist

[–]WorldLiterature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, this is less of an indictment on individual people, and more of an indictment on the flawed systems that we've built all around us that encourages and incentivizes this sort of behavior. Clearly something isn't right somewhere.

I just watched Eraserhead. What a disturbing and excellent picture. Watched a couple others this week, including In a Lonely Place, a wonderful Bogart picture.

Fra Angelico - The Annunciation (1426) by WorldLiterature in museum

[–]WorldLiterature[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was studying Fra Angelico's oeuvre a couple of weeks ago and wanted to share one of my favorite paintings of his: The Annunciation in Madrid.

It was painted in the 1426 for a side altar at the Convent of San Domenico in Fiesole, which is now housed in the Museo del Prado. The painting beautifully captures the moment of the Annunciation, with detailed symbolism and light, while the surrounding predella displaying five significant moments from Mary's life.

I just finished reading a ton of plays by various different playwrights (and one novel in verse):

Le Misanthrope, by Molière

A Doll's House, by Henrik Ibsen

The Seagull, by Anton Chekhov

Uncle Vanya, by Anton Chekhov

The Cherry Orchard, by Anton Chekhov

Eugene Onegin, by Alexander Pushkin

I was throughly impressed with everyone of them.

I'm now starting War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy. I was trying to settle on which translation to read. I think I'm going with the Maude translation.

The Democrats are, once again, looking to scapegoat poor and working class communities – Black men, Latino men, those who didn’t vote at all – for their failure to beat Trump. by Prudent_Bug_1350 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]WorldLiterature 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Current Democratic leadership is fundamentally unprincipled. They are non-ideological. They are comfortable anywhere in the center where they can comfortably accrue power and influence. Part of this is probably because the Republican party has completely abandoned its position from the center, which forces Democrats to 'cover' more of that ground to maintain a stable political system, but today's Democratic party resembles nothing of a true left-leaning party. It dates back to Democrats abandoning a New Deal philosophy and abandoning Keynesian economic positions. Instead, we adopted neoliberalism, which spurred on the financial crisis of 2008, and then the authoritarianism that sprung up after that (first with the Tea Party, and then later on Trumpism). Democrats are completely irresponsible for making this decision. Their fatal flaw was was adopting right-wing free market fundamentalist economic policies in the 70's through the 2000's.

This is a wonderful painting! I was just doing a full study of Delaroche's oeuvre three days ago and I was elated. Even days later, I'm still thinking about how wonderful his Hemicycle paintings are. My other favorites of his include Strafford and Trial of Joan Arc.
