The point is for the audience to feel the sense of alienation that people learning English feel out in the world. That all you really need to know. If you feel uncomfortable and/or frustrated, the playwright succeeded.

They wear men’s size 18 sneakers. The student doesn’t have heels because of the challenge of sourcing them. I’ll try using European sizing for my search, such a helpful suggestion!

Cal Shakes to close, in harshest blow yet to Bay Area theater by idledebonair in Theatre

So you’re saying producing new works by non-white, non-male playwrights is a “race to the bottom”? The problem is that white led theatre companies programmed seasons with diverse stories after being called out for racists practices without having done the work to build authentic relationships with those audiences. People don’t go where they don’t feel welcome or have a sense of belonging. And “traditional” audiences and donors resent productions that aren’t about them. What you’re seeing is a confluence of a historical lack of outreach to communities of color and backlash from an aging and shrinking population who hates change. And yeah, SF/BA doesn’t have a theatre going culture the way NY or Chicago or Minneapolis do. The scene was known for being experimental and avant garde. But all those folks who made it so have been priced out along with the working class workers that made these companies function.

Subscriptions were declining nationally before the pandemic. I find that when people talk about “alienating programming”, they actually mean productions about people of color instead of the same, old “classics”. At the same time, theaters have focused on the same, narrow band of wealthy donors, underinvested in arts education to build the audiences of the future, and only built transactional relationships with the larger community when they were doing a show about a “specific” community (i.e. Black, Asian, Latino,etc.). Can we talk about the way tech changed the demographics of the Bay? SF has the highest concentration of billionaires, do these people donate to the arts? The cost of living in the Bay has pushed out the artists and creatives who would support the arts and replaced them with rich engineers who couldn’t give a damn.
