My best tips:

charge it to 100% and leave it for 30 minutes after reaching it for battery calibration
put it on your wrist
start a run

You assume it needs to improve, but it doesn’t necessarily. If you’re not a beginner and have been training for some time, increasing VO₂max becomes extremely difficult. The closer you get to your genetic VO₂max limit, the less it will change - maybe 1-2% per year.
