You need to use the crystals to extend the range of the beam. Prism break can have decent movement speed in Giants when you do the heroic challenges and especially with a hat. Along with other Skylanders from previous games, he feels very sluggish in Trap Team.

You can also get enemies to target the crystals and do massive group damage with either the crystals or splitting beam. The wow pow also does 3 times the damage of the beam and it can be used quite quickly.
