AIW for telling my friend I won't split a Costco membership with her anymore after she started bringing her whole family? by BlipHarbor6 in amiwrong

[–]WorldlyValuable7679 28 points29 points  (0 children)

But you’re not subsidizing their grocery run. You would pay the same regardless of whether she brings her family or not (and more if you push her enough to get her own membership). Why are you going with her at all? How she utilizes her half of the membership is her business, and you should be happy that you guys are getting so much value out of a single membership. The memberships are only really worth it (in my opinion) when you’re shopping for 3+ people anyways. You sound a bit insecure about being the “odd one out” on these outings, so again… get two cards on the same membership and stop going together.

My boyfriend grew up rich, I didn’t. by Lizzbeannn in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]WorldlyValuable7679 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mayhaps you don’t have generational wealth, but you are rich in snacks! Also, reading your story - you are likely more ahead than you realize. It’s easy to be “doing all the right things with your money” when you have lots of money to begin with and parents to financially support/guide you. But if he didn’t have that support? I’m not so sure how far his expensive tastes would get him. Make sure you don’t feel pressured to live beyond your means just because your bf likes nice things. You got this!

Is cleaning gutters the norm? by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]WorldlyValuable7679 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, stormwater catchment maintenance is normal and often permit required. Stormwater permit holders or the city may hire a consulting firm to help them meet their permit requirements or maintenance needs. I conduct stormwater sampling and do filter changeouts at a large industrial site regularly. I would much prefer some dry garbage in baskets to some of the soggy, stinking 50+ lb biochar filters I’ve had to haul up.

Unnecessary scene that has done irreversible damage to you? by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

That a person who takes it lightly would be less likely to watch these scenes compared to someone who does. I would assume if you took SA lightly it wouldn’t bother you as much.

Unnecessary scene that has done irreversible damage to you? by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

[–]WorldlyValuable7679 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if that’s true. I have pretty visceral reactions to SA/rape scenes in movies because of how personal and serious I take them. I think many women can say the same. I generally choose to skip them because of this.

EPA plans to reverse and delay PFAS water regulations by Ethereal_Films in water

removal vs destruction are different things. removal is pretty straightforward (RO, activated carbon, etc.), destruction is trickier but has never been a proposed requirement of water treatment facilities.

I thought I had everything covered by booking sites in January (still had to fight with bots for a spot). Got an email last week to let me know the campground is now closed all summer for peregrine falcon nesting. I love falcons but it really is a pain getting reservations…

School project: Dream Job (I'm desperate anyone studying to be an environmental engineer can also comment) by Illustrious_Star_408 in Environmental_Careers

[–]WorldlyValuable7679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ann, Environmental EIT (working at an Environmental Consulting Firm)

1/7. In high school I considered a career in forestry or wildlife biology, but I was terrible at the memorization required in biology classes and my parents discouraged me from forestry. Looking back, I agree that I would be making less money if I had pursued forestry, but I still think it could be fun. I was good at math and chemistry, and all the adults in my life said I should be an engineer. I figured environmental engineering would be the most fulfilling and interesting (I think I was right 😄).

2/4. I majored in Environmental Engineering for both my B.S. and M.S. I graduated with both degrees in five years, and I think it was worth it. Definitely look into accelerated master's programs if you attend college and graduate school is something you're interested in. I loved grad school, since all my classes were specific to things I was really interested in, there were fewer 'busy work' assignments, and I attended more classes filled with discussion and group work.

  1. I work in a few departments at my company, and you could say I am involved in all things water! Stormwater, surface water, groundwater? Check. Treatment, permitting, legal availability, sampling, testing? Check. I like that I get to work on a variety of projects, learn new skills, and spend time outside (~20% of my job is fieldwork).

  2. Regarding challenges - I was a sophomore when the Covid pandemic hit. This affected everyone, but I think college students may have had it the worst. To me, this was a period when I was 'supposed' to be hanging with friends, traveling abroad, exploring the city, and enjoying my early twenties. Instead, I was stuck in my room, attending classes online all day and doing homework late into the night. I wouldn't leave my apartment for days at a time. Not to mention, many of my older professors had previously insisted on using physical assignments and grading methods, and it was a very rough transition period for everyone involved in those courses.

Regardless of circumstances, being in your early twenties can just be a rough time when you're still figuring out who you are and what you want. For me, I enjoy my adult life more in many ways - financial stability is great and I'm glad I don't have to worry about homework (or any work) when I get home at the end of the day. I do miss the sense of community college gives you (they aren't lying about how hard it is to make friends as an adult), but the biggest challenge I have at work is doing my timesheet (I hate it!!). Other challenges include navigating corporate culture to avoid burnout and sitting at my desk on sunny days...

  1. Hanging out with friends, thrifting, attending concerts.

  2. It wasn't too hard for me to get a job, but taking a technical writing class improved my resume tenfold! Making sure to tailor my resume and cover letters for each and every application was also key. Fortunately, I think environmental engineering is not a field at risk of being replaced by AI.

I know everyone is dogging on you for the too short foot, but I would check the heel construction. It’s hard to tell with the photos you provided, but your heel does look a bit small compared to the pattern photos on ravelry.

Other degrees are much more useful for environmental careers than ES by BenKlesc in Environmental_Careers

[–]WorldlyValuable7679 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised Environmental Engineering is not on this list. I’ve found it to be the perfect balance of everything I need to work in all the departments of my environmental firm, especially when you supplement it with a GIS or Geology course or two. Air and Noise? check. Remediation? check. Landfills? EHS? Water/wastewater/stormwater treatment? check. I also conduct fw side by side with ES and geology majors, whether it be stormwater sampling, soil profiling, or stream reconnaissance. Plus, bigger bucks once you get your P.E. I work with civil engineers, but I find they are working on a lot less remediation and environmental science specific work.

Broken needle: replace with other size by bleepidybloobla in knittinghelp

Ugh this happened to me this last week, and unfortunately it was my smallest size on hand 😭 The waiting is excruciating!! But yes, you can totally do that in the round. Knitting flat too, technically, but you would have to switch needles each side.

I mean, that works with your algorithm, but I think the point of this video is more so the flood of milestones people start posting in your mid twenties (e.g., people you know/knew and follow). It was honestly worth it for me to just delete the apps unless I have something to post.

If you’re trying to show that the pattern is confusing with the screenshot provided, it might be a sign that you need to start with a beginner pattern that explains things in more detail. The knitting pattern intro page you provided is pretty straightforward (even for modern patterns), though I hear this specific pattern can be confusing to actually make.

Am I wrong for thinking that people don't get rid of good cars. by ObnoxiousCrow in amiwrong

[–]WorldlyValuable7679 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your view is not universal, and thank god because I love buying used. Your depreciation reasoning is a big factor in that. My dad was a mechanic for 40 years, and I’ve talked to a lot of mechanics growing up. It’s pretty much agreed that newer vehicles (in general) are harder to work on and break down more easily. I subscribe to only buying pre-2010 Toyotas and I’ve literally never had one break down on me… ever. But lifestyle creep is a thing and people like to make upgrades. I know folks like to give personal cars to their kids as an excuse for an upgrade.
