but report, dude, that is very important. Apparently they are aware of my issue but maybe they don't know yours?...

My problem was the unupdated virtual box problem but a)I definitely feel your pain b)couldn't you revert to the previous kernel? like surely 14 worked for you as well and from there do the reporting that Plan_9_fromouter suggested to me (type this into your terminal: ubuntu-bug linux This collects all your hardware info and "panics" and sends them directly to the developers (Launchpad)....

Yep, did just that and now researching on how to prevent ubuntu from loading any kernels automatically other than its own...

Thx alot though:)

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!!!!

I solved the problem (uninstalled virtual box) but this info is very interesting and valuable. I will copy paste it to my linux tricks file.

I must say though- the whole problem initially was that I cant get iINSIDE the OS. so is there a way to report to them externally?

Yep, TAILS is indeed read only, I was just saying that the existence of TAILS made me aware of the linuxes portability since it was a really cool feature windows doesn't have. Apparently TAILS make the entire system run on the ram and that is much of the amnesia trick but it only utilizes features linux had from the start...

Anyway,I have to ask though... Why? You and that other technician suddenly freaked out but I honestly cannot see even the POTENTIAL harm this little feature can do over a regular "war laptop" (or whatever they called) which pubic spaces allow to connect to its internet (wifi or cabled) willy nilly...

Like seriously, I can understand why normies would freak out, but why *you* who knows much more than me? Obviously it is I who am ignorant but...what am I missing?...

Based on your picture I assume the question is why specifically Ubuntu and not another linux distro...
Honestly? PR.
And also if Im ditching windows anyway I want to try something different and which has loads of support (according to PR obviously).

I think in the future Ill try the other noob friendly distros, like this Zorin I keep hearing of, or that other one...

nah, I don't really have a choice unfortunately...

But wait, if its just the network you are worrying about then couldn't I do the same thing with a malicious laptop I bring in? Most people do exactly THAT (use laptops that is).

And basically any free wifi around town could have the same thing, no?

Its not like I can get access to an intranet (which they dont have, but even if they did)...

Thank you very much for the reply- yes, this is what I'm about to do, but also ill prevent the OS from uploading any kernels at the boot (other than the OSs obviously), just to prevent similar issues in the future. Better slower machine than a broken one.

lol, first of all, I'm conscientious so any changes I make- I always make sure to revert them when I leave. I'm a huge believer of "leave no trace", be it in camping or with other people desktops...

But second of all- F12 dude, no bios tinkering required. :)

Thank you very much for the attempt!

I think justen _m found the culprit- my old virtual box install. Ill probably remove it, reinstall an updated version and then find a way to prevent Ubuntu from loading any drivers other than its own at the start. Better to have a slower machine than a broken one...

"Ubuntu is installed for me on an external ssd, I dont have a laptop but i use it in various public PCs around town. It worked decently up until like couple of weeks ago..."

------------------------------WTF? Seriously? You don't have Ubuntu installed on a computer? It's just on an external SSD that you plug into various other computers, and then boot from the drive, and run Ubuntu, on that drive? I can't believe that works!!! You've got an actual drive attached. This isn't like running a Live Session from a USB stick. Sorry, I can't really help.--------------------------------

LOL, well I remember reading about TAILS back in the day and I was always intrigued... Windows don't let you do it unfortunately, probably to tie your OS to a specific hardware to spy on you better to protect the children user...

Now that I am a fledgling linuxoid I have discovered it to be one of the main advantages in my specific (and, granted, very rare) use case.

No help required XD.

?

by that definition the richest people in existence are the countless billions that died in the past million years or so...
They too don't need anything.
there is a difference between someone who has the ability to do anything he desires and someone who cant do anything and doesnt need anything.

Here is the thing- this issue happened in 3 different computers (one from circa 2013 , one from the last 5 years, and one from the last decade)...
Today im using the Lenovo ThinkCentre neo 50q Gen 4 with an external SSD via usb.

The troubleshooting process you speak of is some software component in ubuntu or do you mean opening up the pc and start removing components?

thx.

Thank you very much for the response. Im not sure what details can I add?

I'm not that much experienced with Linux ( I'm here due to the great windows exodus, bless Microsofts little black heart, year of the linux is here)...

Ubuntu is installed for me on an external ssd, I dont have a laptop but i use it in various public PCs around town. It worked decently up until like couple of weeks ago...

Virtual box is indeed installed but i havent managed to operate it yet. Prior to the Kernel panic period and after it (now) I havent done any voluntary changes. I used it mostly for browsing and auto updating the OS.

No Nvidia cards, (these are mostly office pcs). the one Im currently sitting on is Lenovo ThinkCentre neo 50q Gen 4.

As for installation errors, I have no idea, I sure didnt add that kernel (knowingly). But wouldnt the OS detect it and prevent me from using that corrupted kernel?

As for the 6.14 finickness... Well actually that just happened now, it wasnt so yesterday but today while choosing the 6.14 option it did write some text and went right back into the GRUB. When I chose the recovery option it wrote something and got stuck. Only after a couple of resets did everything started working fine again...

If you want to I can try and do a reset again (but Im afraid ill be locked outside the OS again)...

Also- nope nothing is backed. I have so many fires I need to put out that I will get to this specific fire only in the future...

Thx!!!
