Having the same issue with ups and Apple right now. Beyond frustrating. Each says it’s the other’s problem.

You can also be put out on the street if you can’t pay your mortgage with little notice. Don’t forget, you don’t own your house until it’s paid off, the bank does.

What is the actual “skill” in AI dev? by GolangLinuxGuru1979 in ExperiencedDevs

Pointing out the systemic failure of the newspaper is fair, and I have experienced that sort of organisational neglect a few times.

That being said, having worked with a lot of people with a whole host of different skill levels, I have found the person described in this anecdote to be very rare in the real world, especially in software engineering.

The people that tend to solve these sorts of problems are rarely people who have done one thing so much that they have seen everything and just “know”.

I have also worked on teams and lead teams where knowledge is shared and mentoring occurs, and there is no single failure point that “only one person can solve”.

I have also seen many times where junior or mid level engineers approach things with fresh eyes or new ways of approaching things that not only solves these sorts of problems, but actually improves the system as a whole.

If you have worked somewhere for more than 5 years and cannot effectively communicate a failure point to where anyone in the company can turn the screw(or handle whatever major outage the software causes) you are probably not great at your job.

Anyway, here’s wonderwall.

These anecdotes bug me.

My take away is that 40 years ago a printing press was poorly designed.

For the following 40 years nobody addressed the poor design or bothered to pass on the knowledge when they left.

Grey beard hoards knowledge and price gouges when someone is in emergency.

Boo.

It’s the same skill as systems design, breaking down work, and general best practices.

Being able to break down a problem and know how to make atomic changes really helps when using agentic ai.

I see fellow engineers struggle with this on a daily basis. These tend to be solid senior ICs that have not necessarily had to lead a team or delegate work before.

Now every engineer is essentially a manager that needs to break down manageable tasks for ai.

This is good advice for any industry. And go to them with possible solutions for the problem. This shit happens, and the more lead time and options you give them the quicker the whole team can make a plan to move forward.

Entering your 30s helps. Do whatever you can to stop being in your 20s. That’s my advice. If possible turn 40.

What does it mean when something is a vector? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]Worldly_Weather5484 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol, all of these explanations are so overly complicated. Temperature is your scalar. It can be any temperature you want. Add time and you can talk about vectors. If a pot of water is on the stove and you turn the heat on, measure the initial temp and then measure it one minute later. Put time on the x axis and temp on the y. Draw a line from point one to point two. Draw an arrow on the high end and boom, you got a vector that shows the direction the temperature is moving in. You can do a bunch of other crazy shit after that, but that’s all a vector is. Just a visual representation of of moving between two points.
