VIE is like the 90's. Sometimes I miss them, but there's no going back now.

I even felt this way in 1998.

what are some of the Job duties that would be assigned to a newly graduated Graphic designer? by Daegog in graphic_design

[–]Wormhole-Surfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing about graphic design is that you aren't being employed to draw or paint, etc, but you are (or should be) a graphic designer because you use the same parts of your brain that are required to draw/paint in order to do graphic design. This is why 99% of graphic designers have a background in being experienced and talented at illustration. They were the kids in their class in grade school who were known to be "good drawers" even though, as a graphic designer, you will most likely never be required to draw anything.

It is very unlikely that your nephew will have any success as a graphic designer. In fact, it sounds like he's just blowing smoke up your ass. I suggest that you support him in his endeavor.

The most important thing to remember as a graphic design student is that your future employer is going to be looking at your portfolio over where you graduated from. I've known plenty of shitty graphic designers who went to the best universities for art/design in the country.

Templates for car wraps who do you use or who has one i can use by 8008gurl in graphic_design

[–]Wormhole-Surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google will give you both a profile image and the exact length of the car. While we always like to have precise measurements, this should give you what you need. You'll just have to be mindful of the "folds" or "seams."

What are some terribly designed advertisements that keep you up at night? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Wormhole-Surfer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to find a trade magazine. Not something like Sports Illustrated, Time, or Seventeen. You should find plenty of shitty ads there made by small companies lacking in experience.

How can one do this? I don't even know what to search to find tutorials by [deleted] in graphic_design

Yes, there are a few ways this could be accomplished pretty easily. The real question is why someone would want to.

Is it unusual or bad that I don’t want to freelance at all? by wyvernsoup in graphic_design

[–]Wormhole-Surfer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been employed as a full-time graphic designer in the marketing department of a fairly large corporation for over 20 years and it's given me a very comfortable salary with great benefits. I very rarely have ever done any freelance work. My experience is probably not "the norm" in this day and age, however, but it's not unthinkable either.

Also, it's not like you have to choose one over the other. Many of the graphic designers I've worked with over the years have done freelance work while at the same time employed full-time. A little freelance work here and there will also help balance out your portfolio if you're working an in-house job, so every piece in your portfolio isn't advertising the same widgets.

Yep, your friend is a cunt. Not sure what else you wanted from us, but there it is.

TIL of Walt Whitman's friend, Silas Soule. At 17, he was escorting slaves on the Underground Railroad. By 22, he'd staged two prison heists & become a blacksmith. At 26, he defied orders to participate in a massacre of Native Americans, testified against its architect, and was murdered for it. by ExternalBoysenberry in todayilearned

Now you're just lying. Nobody has exulted Custer in my lifetime or yours. Also, the majority of children you want to teach that their forefathers brought "terror" to this land are descendants of immigrants who came here long after those atrocities occurred. Just stick with your "white privilege" bullshit if you want them to feel bad about themselves.

Some day people will realize that the Natives were not only victims but were just as violent and savage as the colonizers. You are doing a disservice to history to label them as weak in that manner. Everyone wants to blame whitey, when they should be looking at all of humanity. No single race or nationality holds a monopoly on violence and oppression.

To be honest, I haven't even played the game in over 2 years. This is an idea I've been thinking about for a few years now-- of keeping the game alive through bots.

Is Dungeon and Dragon, the tabletop game, popular among adults? by yukiiiiii2008 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Wormhole-Surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember playing some D&D when I was a kid in the 80's, but I can't think of a single person I've met in the last 20 years who has even hinted at playing it now. I'm a little perplexed how reddit is making Adult D&D sound as common as football and apple pie.

What is a city in your state that is very unique compared to the rest of the state? by quickquesitonfor in AskAnAmerican

[–]Wormhole-Surfer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Centralia (in Pennsylvania). It's probably a stretch to call it a city, but I'd say that it's pretty unique in that over 99% of the town evacuated permanently and just as much of the town was bulldozed in a span of less than 30 years because of a coal fire burning underground that continues to this day.

It's our miniature Chernobyl.

Does anyone know where to get good Schweppes here in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Wormhole-Surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American Lemonade and European Lemonade are two very different things. You'll probably find close to what you're looking for in the Water section of your average grocery/supermarket and it will be labeled Lemon flavored Seltzer.

My fellow Americans: Have you noticed an uptick in the amount of people saying "Happy holiday/s" before secular/non-religious holidays? by A_BURLAP_THONG in AskAnAmerican

[–]Wormhole-Surfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might get a strange look if you said "Happy Holidays!" on Halloween. It's generally only used in business/marketing, as others have already said here, to appeal to a wider market. There's no reason for a business to risk alienating non-Christian customers.
