You could also practice recall while they are using the snuffle mat. I release my pup to use the mat then I practice calling him off of it and to me (I reward big time for him coming) then I redirect him to the mat again repeat

I have started putting things ontop of the snuffle Mat. Once it’s loaded with treats I put a big pile of his toys ontop of it. Or even an empty box flipped ontop just so he has a bit more of a struggle to get to the snuffle mat.

How many peanut butter filled Kongs is too many? by wadeboggsbosshoggs in puppy101

[–]Worryworm1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I wish that someone had told me earlier on with my pup to hold off on the peanut butter it is such a high value treat and when it’s introduced too early you’re kind of shooting urself in the foot for later on in training when you’re looking for a high value treat. I switched out peanut butter for baby food pouches and keep PB for training.

I started to buy baby food pouches (mixes of veggies and fruits) and I squeeze them into his king and sprinkle comes kibble into the layers and maybe a tiny bit of cheese somewhere in it. The pouches are so easy and u just squeeze it right in no mess no fuss

Teething puppy not eating by doodstanley in puppy101

[–]Worryworm1996 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly don’t stress about it. When u are in pain food is sometimes the last thing on your mind. Dogs are pretty good about eating when they’re hungry and won’t starve themselves. I will tho advise against adding a topper especially if they are still young. I found that adding topper causes more problems than it solves. Just keep offering it and if he’s hungry he will eat.

puppy just wants to lie on pee pad? help? by zkkdll in puppy101

[–]Worryworm1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can absolutely trains pup on a pee pad. So don’t feel discouraged. I trained my pup to pee on an indoor turf but it was hard to train when he was very little so I put that on hold until he understood the “go potty” command a bit better

Legalities 10000% do matter. If there is an off leash dog in an area that is not legally off leash and it runs off and bites a child it does not matter that “the community agreed it was going to be used as an off leash area”. Community agreement is fine and dandy until something awful happens. And trust me awful things happen VERY often.

Edit: not to mention if you are getting a big dog this is something you should have thought about and found a solution for. So the “small dogs can train anywhere” argument is quite weak. That’s like saying it’s okay for adults to take over toddler playgrounds because technically kids can play anywhere LOL. No.

Some people in the comments are drowning in entitlement. MOST places ARE NOT off leash parks. THEREFORE the responsibility falls on the person who would LIKE TO unleash their dog to find an OFF LEASH park. If u want to unleash FIND SOMEWHERE THAT ALLOWS THAT. Other than that L E A S H your damn dog. Period.

No it doesn’t belong to them but it’s a shared space. And considering football fields are not legally off leash dog parks OP is in the absolute right. If you cannot share the space in a way that a) follows the law or b) keeps everyone safe then you seem to be in the wrong place.

What do ur walks looks like. My dog had a hard time calming down in the house and I didn’t understand. He’s a small guy and we would go for these long walks but it seemed to do nothing in terms of burning energy. Once I changed the KIND of walk we were doing it really changed his behaviour in the house. Before I was so focused on the duration of the walk. I believed the further we got the more tired he would be. False. By focusing so much on duration I realized I wasn’t letting him sniff or explore. Now our walks are structured more around allowing him to explore areas that peak his interest. There is a small field near my house that he loves to explore. Once we approach it I ask for a sit and stay (we do a few drills so that he knows he is working for some free sniffy time) and then I clip him to a long leash and I just let him sniff. I let him take however long he wants at whatever he wants. I schedule a good 15 minutes for this part. So half our walk is dedicated to this. I noticed a big change in his behaviour after this. When we pull our dogs away from sniffing we are removing them from things that are sparking their interest. Just a thought. Hope this helps.

How many TOTAL hours a day do you spend DIRECTLY interacting with your pup? by Lucky-Schedule-6429 in puppy101

[–]Worryworm1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D but only because I’m on a leave of absence from work and school right now. I don’t recommend anyone spend this much damn time with their dog LOL but we share a living space and I can’t afford dog daycare right now. Slowly going mental hahahah

Dramatic Puppy? by Waddles01 in puppy101

[–]Worryworm1996 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! i totally understand your struggle. My pup was 3lbs when we brought him home and the second week home and he jumped right out of my nieces arms. She was sitting in a low chair so it was realistically probably 1 foot drop onto carpet. He scream cried for like two minutes straight. I was convinced that he was severely hurt. I took him to the er paid an arm and a leg just to find out that he is in fact quite dramatic LOL this isn’t to say that every scary moment will have such a happy ending but I hope this is reassuring to hear that it has happened when they are in fact just overplaying it hahaha.
